air cleaner on Brian Waddell's Burb?

Dodge 5.2's have an intake elbow that should work for ya.

I think some vortec motors might have one as well.

I was doing a google search and came upon a heep guys tbi swap. Here is the system he has...

TBI.jpg

he says he bought it as a kit from Redline Motorsports... looks VERY similar to the ebay ones I keep tripping over...

here is another pic of the kit he bought:

cool. :) I sent a couple of questions to sellers on ebay, just to confirm. I don't wanna pay a bunch of $$$ for just a piece of tube and a filter. We'll see how it goes from here. The ones I am looking at have a 3.5" intake tube... that oughta be big enough... though I wouldn't complain about a 4" one.

I'll post up when I hear back from these ebay guys. There is a cool paypal promotion going right now where they give you ca$h back for using paypal on eBay... but you have to spend $30+... and these assclowns on ebay are charging $18 for the kit... plus $24 shipping... and I don't think shipping counts in the promotion... sigh...

one ebay guy sent a pic... handy,

IM000001.JPG

still would have been nice if he sent some text along with his response though... like "yeah, that part is included, here is a pic of the complete system installed!" As it is, I'm left to assume that it does. At any rate, I've contacted paypal customer service via email to see if their $15-off promotion includes shipping fees or not. If it does, I'll order one of these. $27 for a new air box, tube, filter and hardware is a heck of a deal. All I would have to add is a firewall flange... some bent exhaust tube... and a pre-filter wrap and I'll be ready for serious water fording. :)

J, if you're up and around (dunno how involved the surgery was) and there's a pick n pull type of yard nearby, go try and find a dodge. I'm sure they wouldn't charge much.

yeah the hat is included in all of them. the reason they charge so much for shiping is ebay only charges a fee based on asking and selling prices shipping not factored in. so people get around it by charging an arm and aleg for shipping then only charge $10 or so for the part.

I have bought 2 of those sets up off of ebay.

i know why they do it... and it doesn't really bother me... unless it screws me over on that new paypal promotion. I want my $15 off!

yeah, he responded that he was busy RD for several other customer's projects... and then I told him not to worry about it, because a cheap mass-produced alternative is already available. Several different types of these on ebay for under $50, including the filter, hardware, silicone joints etc. You ain't gonna find anything custom fabbed that cheap, unless you are doing the fab work yourself. When I pick one, buy it and receive it... I'll update this thread with pics.

Okay, MINOR HIJACK of the thread, sorry....but does this thing, either the e-bay one or the dodge setup fit on a standard four barrel carb? I currently have a q-jet and will be changing to a Edelbrock soon...I really like the idea of putting my filter inside the truck instead of sucking crap inside the engine bay....

How bad is the interior noise when you run the aircleaner through the firewall like that?

I was mulling over the idea of an enclosed airbox (like the K&N solution) with an extension tube that would run to the front grille for fresh air, but that could also allow the entire assembly to be rotated 180* so that it could also be routed through the firewall when wheeling.

I'd always wondered how much intake noise it would create and how annoying it would be to run it that way (into passenger compartment) for normal street driving. :dunno:

It's not that bad. There's a little extra noise at idle. And when you really get on it, there's like a howling sound. My filter is still in the stock location. But I have a K&N cone filter that will eventually be under the dash

The desert race truck I currently work on has the filter in the cab. Even with all of the other noise & a 2 chamber flowmaster, the one time I drove it hard I could hear the 2.8l screaming it's heart out thru the intake filter.

I haven't run mine that way, but I imagine that it will add some noise. Of course, my rig is going all tube... so its going to be pretty noisy anyway. :dunno:

I did plan on wrapping some kind of insulation around the tube that runs through the cab, and where the tube terminates behind the passanger compartment, I am going to fab a "mud shield" thingy that will not only keep water/mud from landing on the otherwise exposed filter, but will shield the passangers from any sound that might come outta there. We'll see how it works I guess. The way I figure, any time you go full tube, you have pretty much thrown "but what about the noise?" out the window. ;)

update. I followed some auctions and bought one of these cheap cold air kits. Details:

ebay seller: racing_guys

cost: 17.99 + 23.99 shipping

hookup: paypals $15-back on a $30 purchase offer.

link....

https://paypal.promotionexpert.com/greatshopping/signup/200702/misc_s.html?route=misc

so my total, after the rebate = $26.98 shipped. Not bad... just the filter + s/h would cost that much (or more) from Summit. Anyway... here is how it looked when it arrived...

intake_1.jpg

... opened her up... most parts are individually wrapped to protect the bling...

intake_6.jpg

...unwrapped...

intake_5.jpg

Not bad looking at all. The plenum box thingy isn't exactly the best fabbed piece around... but it looks water tight and should do the job. Check out the inlet for it... those stair steps don't look like the best way to get air to flow freely... but oh well!

intake_3.jpg

the tube pieces are 3.5"... plenty big enough. Bottom of the plenum box...

intake_4.jpg

filter media close up... these things need to be oiled right?

intake_8.jpg

inside the filter pic... no idea why... lol!! it does look cool...

intake_2.jpg

pic of me, the crawl beenie and the new camera... :thumb:

intake_7.jpg

anyway, I test fit it on my TBI and all looks good. Can't wait to install it and route the intake through the cab. Hydro lock? me thinks not! :)

once its installed, Im going to use one of those prefilter "wraps"... and there will be a big-glob-of-mud shield also (aluminum?). More pics to come. Anyway, this seems to be a good/cheap way to get a cheap plenum box. :)

Used to be that all of those cotton gauze filters needed to be oiled. AEM has one out now that does not need oiling. It's dyed blue like yours.

jason ran his stuff into the cab on his crew cab, might want to ask him for pick
i am pretty sure he ran PVC stuff
