so, with the stock setup on my 87 k5, it has the factory air cleaner box, with the tube going to the core support. but I noticed after going through some water/mud that It got up the tube, into the filter, and a bit into the TBI. (glad i didnt break my engine) but my question is what's the best way to keep the mud/water out of there

You would have had to go through a pretty deep water/mud hole for that to happen. To answer your question though a snorkle is probably what you'll need for the depth of water/mud hole you went through if that's indeed the cause of the water in the air filter housing.

It really wasn't that deep maybe 3 feet I was searching Google, and on the "90s" body style trucks, they have the tube goin into the passenger fender instead of the core support, you think that'd help

Do you still have the deflector at the front of the air intake at the radiator support?

No, I don't want you to cut the deflector, I was just wondering if it was there. It seems crazy that you had problems with the OEM setup.
