Air Compressor Oil

So what is so special about air compressor oil? It appears to be a single viscosity weight, non-detergent oil... any ideas?

And what about the synthetic compressor oil that Amsoil and a few other companies offer, is it worth it? My buddy has a large compressor that runs almost non stop while he's using it, and was wondering what the best oil would be for it.

I hooked up my new compressor last night. Book said to use Mobil 1 synthetic 10 w 30. It also said NOT to use conventional oil.

Other than that I dont know.
