I would like to inspect the inside of the air tank for rust. What type of socket do I need to remove this plug?

I was too cheap to buy anything. I had a piece of square stock the size I needed. Welded it to a bar. You could use square tubing also.

it's just a square drive.. measure from flat to flat.... looks like maybe 1"?

that's gonna be a bear to get out prolly...

you can either buy the square drive socket, or if the size is 3/4", 1", etc you can just use a breaker bar or ratchet of that size and stick the drive in.... like you do with many of the smaller plugs like that, 3/8 and 1/2 drives usually do the fill plugs on various diffs, etc...

OR you can buy some square stock from McMaster Carr, local hardware, etc of that size, like a 6" hunk, seat it down in there and use a wrench on it.. more than likely gonna need a cheater pipe on it...

edit - doh! slow typer.. Wade beat me to it!! :haha:

pull a side or upper plug first .

bottom it will be hard to see up in / then back down for rust .

like said can be a MAJOR P.I.T.A to get out .

I got a 60 gal tank stand up style . put it in my lawn and got out the big pipe wrench and cheeter pipe for a side plug only .

and lots of them now are sealing to the body of the tank with a o-ring .

I had to track down a o-ring and its holding fine . had 150psi in it almost 1 year ago and stored in shop corner with prob down to 120ish last I checked . I note loss to cheep quick coupler seapage .

small pen light in a extra small fitting to light up the inside as you look in the bigger side hole.

how I checked mine . what I seen as rust was mostly oily junk / sludge .

I added water and purple power cleaner and a long plastic rod I had for scrubbing scrapping action . did this a few times and clean . let air dry for day or so on HOT black top driveway ( tank black also :D ) and all was good . I did spray light coat of rust inhibitor / convertor in just in case . :thumb:
