The air compressor that I have says it will produce 8.9 CFM at 40 PSI. The new spray gun that i bought has a 30 PSI inlet pressure and consumes 13 CFM do you think that the compressor is big enough to properly work the gun?

You'll probably need to plan to stop from time to time and let the compressor catch up. Hi volume, low pressure spray guns use up a LOT of air. The larger your storage tank, the less frequently you'll need to stop.

Agreed.

if i crank up the air compresors pressure and use a regulator at the gun would this help the compressor work less?

Nope. The size of the storage tank is the limiting factor (well, other than a compressor pump that isn't big enough for the job). When the tank pressure drops below the 30 PSI that your gun wants, you'll have to stop and wait for the compressor to catch up.
