I wouldn't even consider a 110v compressor. Keep the compressor you currently have. You can buy them new for around $450 though like the one you have.

Honestly it's too big. I think I've used it once so far this year and that was to air up tires. Since I moved it into this garage a year ago I have done major car repair twice and could have done that with a much smaller air compressor.
My half of the gf's garage is going to require a lot of packing in order for me to be able to keep most of my tools. This thing just occupies too much space, I don't use it, and there's no 220V in that garage anyway.

Something a bit smaller that won't require it's own dedicated plug would be great.

The likelyhood of me putting a lift kit on a rusty old truck any more is about zero. I've had a set of hubs for the Tracker sitting on my workbench for months now. Hell, 9 months come to think of it.

throw it on CL for 300..

than go out and get a wheel-around oilless 110 unit...

it'll almost be a wash coin-wise.. but downgrade you to a new, small, easily moved occasional-use unit..

What's the reason for oilless?
Always heard they were loud.

it's just the economical light choice for something gets used maybe a couple times a yr... oiled compressors are heavy... and yup, they scream like banshees, but twice a yr, who cares..

i have a 60 gallon in my shop and this one for the house for what ever. i wouldnt get rid of either one plus my shop is 100 feet from the house. also check out pawn shops they can have some very good deals on air tools and compressors but know what your buying . just my .02

I have the horizontal version of that compressor. It's noisy as all get up but works pretty good. It worked good when I put my lift kit on.

Hmmm, have to consider it then. Good point. I won't keep this on all the time like I once did the last one.

Any difference in capacity, duty cycle, etc with the oil less units?

Oil-less compressors don't last very long and are LOUD.

Hmmm, probably just go oiled then. I can change the oil every year when I do the lawn mower.

For occasional use, the oilless works fine. yes, they suck, yes they are loud. But i've been using the same 2 tank nailgun style off-brand compressor for 10 yrs. It will barely spin 8 lug nuts off my truck in a row with the impact, but it works. Hasn't let me down.

As long as you aren't using air sanders, spray gun, cutoff wheel, etc.....it gets the job done.

That being said....I'll trade you straight up for your compressor:waytogo:

Well, I'd be inclined to consider yours instead of the guy I work with's "offer" but no, I decline.

Thanks though.:waytogo:

My oilless died 2 days ago. Good riddance to that hunk of ****.
ha. mine died last weekend. i figure i got 4 years out of heavy wrenching out of something designed to fill up footballs and pool floaties. i cant bitch. bout a new one last night to last me until i buy a house and can run enough 220 lines for dryer/welder/air compressor on seperate circuits.

AJM, for the use you are talking about, a decent 10-15 gallon oilless will be all you'll need. otherwise much like you have now, its a more expensive, space taking tool that you never get to use anyway.

I'll go with Scott on this one.

I would put air compressor needs on a weekly basis.

If you don't use your air weekly and you don't mind the noise and constant running of the compressor then a cheap oilless system would probably be best for you.

If, however, you hate the noise and constant running and lack of air then go with a 220v oiled compressor. Even if you just hate the noise of a running compressor go with something bigger then your needs.

I paid about $900 bucks for my current compressor and then probably $400 more in filters, regulators and water separators but I have "constant" dry air at 150 PSI all day long and my compressor is quiet.

Dollars vs desires.

I have an old Speedaire 110V that's 15-17 amps. It does probably around 4cfm at 60psi and has oil in the crankcase. It's got a 20 gallon tank and I added another 11 gallon tank off the plumbing on the far end of the garage near the big door (my only 20 amp circuit is in the back for the furnace). The extra tank keeps me from having issues with the long run of line to get to the driveway (I don't want to plumb anything in permanently because this is a rental, also why I don't have 220). This setup keeps up just fine with my impact, air hammer, and I even got away with the DA sander for doing my hood (although that took some patience). As far as typical garage work goes though, this thing works just fine and I've worked with less in the past.

The one thing I'll say though, is I don't think this would be worth it if it required much financial investment. I was given the compressor and put some new rings and bearings in it for about $40.

Is your current compressor set up so that you could put a 110V motor on it with a little creativity? Maybe change some pulleys out...

Costco usually sells a little 4gal compressor with an oiled crankcase for around $100. I bought one years ago and it was a lot better than nothing, and it's really handy to be able to plug in to an extension cord or take to someone's house in a car trunk. It will run an impact, air ratchet, fill up tires, etc. just fine and it's pretty quiet since it's not oilless.

Put it on Craigslist today and within an hour a guy emailed me. Less than 4 hours later he's driven up here, paid me, picked it up, and gone home with it. Didn't even try to negotiate for $350 cash.:D

Okay, in that vein, my gf gets a slight discount at Lowe's. What do you think of this CH 20 gallon unit:

It's oilless but sounds like it has pretty good features. I'd end up paying a bit less than I got for the other one.

My oil less served me for 12 years and now is serving my friend.
I have done everything with it and only gave it away because I got this nice 220 compressor for cheap and it's quiet.
