air horn ? QUESTION ON SWITCH

ok....will this one sound like the 18 wheeler????

if not would anyone want to do me a BIG favor and rip the horn, tank, valve out of an actual truck in a wrecking yard????????i`ll pay you for the stuff, shipping, and labor?????:D :D :D

Ok, well I slept 12 hours instead of 7, so the pics are a little later than I'd planned. Nonetheless, here they are.

I used a couple of hacked out pieces of sheetmetal to hold the cable in place at each end. Bent them in a tube, slid the cable in, then hammered it in place. Holds them pretty good, the rough edges bite into the cable real nice. I screwed the end of the cable right to the roof, I just pull on the cable sheath and it opens the valve. I was wishing the cable I had was a little longer, it was just barely long enough to have it hang down a bit so I can pull on it.

I wouldn't recommend going with the poly tubing I've got, it blew out on me when I was wheeling once, just as we were using my OBA to reseat a blown bead. Pretty inconvenient. I'm running it off a York, BTW.

As far as mud goes, I've had it submerged a couple of times in mud, a couple of toots and it clears right out. Never been a problem.

i still want to see what he has done with the bike cable but in the mean time does anyone know of a switch that you can somehow make operate on a cable....maybe get a toggle switch that has a spring in it like this

I'm not sure if I understand your question completely. But the setup you diagrammed is exactly how the rigs have them set up. The toggle switch sits up at the top of the door/A Pillar, the switch has a lever with a hole wear the chain or rope attaches. The other end of the chain is attached back up at the top of the door. In other words the switch would look just like a ceiling fan switch untill the other end is attached to the roof line.

I have only seen mechanically operated switches, to operate the horn with a push button you would have to find a solenoid/electomechanical set up of some sort.

Are you confusing switches with valves? He's talking about connecting a pull cable to a switch, which would then have to be wired to a solenoid actuated valve of some sort. Most big rigs have a pull cable mechanically connected to a valve, not a switch as you say.

A "toggle switch" wouldn't operate any differently than a push button switch, and would require the same "solenoid/electromechanical set up."

Mmmm yeah I was trying to say just that...I guess not very clearly, and yeah, I said switch instead of valve thinking that would be more clear for him.

i`m sorry i should have told you that if i used a switch i would get a horn with a solenoid

does anyone want to take me up on my offer???

I would, but I don't forsee myself in the semi wrecker's yard for quite some time. It's a long drive, and I'm never in that area. Maybe this summer if one of my buddies decides to do OBA we may take a trip.

You know what I might just do that!

I've got a single 24"?, it's a round bell though, the tubing, and valve, and a tank.

I haven't any idea about the shipping though. I'll try to dig it up this afternoon.

Whaddya think? I'll grab pics at least.

pics would be great...i might be using a propane tank as an air tank

another question....where to mount...i think roof is out of question becuase of lightbar so its either mount to the cab( basically have the end of horn meet where the cab and cap meet in the corner of the cap),floor underneath, frame or eng. compartment

would either of these sound different?

this is a big mess i hope you understand it....option 1 is on cap and 2 is on frame or floor
