do i need the air pump or can i just take it off? is the air pump just necessary for the CA trucks? will it run different if i take it off? its an 88
thanks

AIR may or may not affect how the truck performs. Been documented on similar year *TPI* injection that AIR *is* used to modify the O2 sensor readings to the ECM. Whether it does that in TBI trucks is unknown as far as I have seen. Doubtful, but not impossible.

Many many people have removed AIR and have no * easily noticeable* problems at least.

Reason to remove for me would be one: something in that system has failed and needs repair to work right. It "costs" essentially nothing in power, as with most "emissions" devices, so for a power standpoint removal is pointless.

If you are in an area that does visual emissions checks, you should fail. If you live NEAR an emissions inspection county/zone/whatever and pull it off, if you ever decide to sell the truck, you may have a hard time.

AIR pumps seem to be notorious for being pulled off "working", but once re-installed, not working.

iirc, all it does is help the O2 sensors heat up faster. O2 reads lean because of air in exhaust stream and dumps more fuel in to warm up exhaust. i don't know anything about how it turns on or off, i'm lucky i don't have one.

air system is not a performance system in any way lol
but in cali they are real strict on having original emissions systems intact and operating

dont you have inspections and testing to worry about out there still ?

hmm

good luck

You need it if it was there originally. It helps light off the cat by pushing air down stream in the exhaust.

1st removing the AIR system is illegal. (no matter what state)
2nd removing the AIR system will cause more pollution
3rd removing the AIR system will not hurt performance

It is your choice to remove the system. But the main issue the government forces pollution control devices on vehicles is to protect the air that we breath.

I think it is not worth the hassle to take it off. There really are not to much many benefits to gain from removing it besides some busted knuckles.
