Ok I have built 3 cables none of which work. I am starting to get annoyed. My first cable worked but I didnt have it built very well so it broke. Next one just doesnt work. I cannot figure out what is wrong.

I am wiring it just like the bottom image on this page: http://winaldl.joby.se/aldlcable.htm

And then I have the DATA wire going to PIN E of the OBD plug (wire color ORANGE) and the ground going to PIN A (wire color BLACK/WHITE).

Can anyone please help me out? I do not have $60 to just throw down on a cable and I need to log data so I can have a chip burned.

The computer doesnt need to be in diagnostic mode does it?

I forgot to not start the blazer when it was in diag mode, could that be the issue (fried comp)?

Any help would be appreciated as always. Thanks

Parts I am using are from radioshack, using 10K ohm resistors and the 2n3904 transistor

anyone? Would like to figure this out today. I just wired a new one up and I am going to try to use a 12 volt source (cig lighter)

I know that if you use a serial port you need a 12 volt source (cig lighter) the USB gets it's own power so no external power source is needed.

Ill try that then after work. Man I hope it works. I really need to get this thing running good so I can drive it this winter. Otherwise I will be forced to waste some money on new tires for my Jetta.

I used this that bottom one that you used, It worked fine, no external power needed, but I think that varies by laptop, maybe yours isn't supplying enough power. make sure you have the correct com port selected in winaldl. You also shouldn't need r3 on that diagram.

try running the laptop off an inverter instead of the battery, may not be supplying enough voltage to the serial port when on battery.

Double check the pinout of your transistor. Unfortunately not all npn's of the same package have the same pinouts.
Does it still start? if so, I doubt you fried the ecm.
Does your laptop have an rs232 port built in? If not, you are using a usb-232 converter and it is highly unlikely it is mapped to COM1. Check control panel->system->device manager->ports (or something along those lines)

Laptop battery is shot, so I have it plugged in to an extension cord.

Pretty sure I have the pinout of the transistor correct. At least according to the package I do. Anyway I can test what the collector, emitter and base are with a multi meter?

Truck still starts and runs and laptop does have a rs232 built in

Well I just tried the cable with a 12V+ source like in the diagram. Still nothing on the computer?

Is there some special settings that need to be changed on my laptop? Really want to figure this out, starting to piss me off. Having thoughts of flames and a burned down blazer. :doah:

What kind of behaviour is your K5 exhibiting? Might be able to help you diagnose it without an ALDL assistance.

its not running bad or anything. It does run rich but I need to re adjust the timing. I mostly need to get data logged so I can get a chip burned from Brian at tbichips.

Other than that the only thing I noticed is it idles a little high. Also need to get some things erased like the egr from the chip.

It would be hard for me to believe you've made 3 or more bad cables. And I doubt there's anything wrong with the ecm. Its got to be something with the laptop or winaldl. Do you have the right ecm type selected in winaldl, and you said You have the right com port. Are you using a usb to serial adapter? is there anyway you can borrow another laptop to test. Also make sure you didn't reverse the pinouts on the serial plug.

Im gonna see if I can borrow a different laptop tonight.

No serial to usb adapter. Serial pins are correct. I was doing some research on thirdgen.org last night and people have had the problem of the ecm not sending data and putting a different one in and it working. Im hoping that is not the case but we will see.

You have been able to datalog before with the first cable you made right? If so then you should still be able to, nothing should have changed with the ecm.

Thats what I am thinking but I may have made the cable different the first time. I will have to look.
