I saw this guy driving around town with a pretty nice Jeep JK Wrangler that was all customized with a lots of off road accessories. It was maroon with black wheels and looked sharp. Did not look like it was the type of jeep you take off road, but oddly enough, it was built up as if it was ready for the great off road adventure.

This thing had at least a 3 inch lift, full winch bumper, custom rear bumper, fully padded roll bars, two large mounted fire extinguishers, Baja lights, skid plate, mounted jack, suspension upgrades, cargo net doors, rock sliders and even a small shovel mounted inside the back cargo area. The only thing missing was the CB radio and the mounted spare gas can. I just happen to pull into the same gas station where this guy was filling up and commented on how nice his jeep looked. I mentioned that it looked like it was ready for some serious off road excursion, to which he replied, “I don’t take it off road”. I said, “really, with all those accessories you would think otherwise.” His response was “Built for off road, but doesn’t go off road…stuff is more for the look” Now let me say this, it was not a show truck with all types of chrome and shiny parts, it actually had more of a blackout package (wheels, mirrors, pumpers, ect) and was basically a daily driver for the guy.

Granted, I am not someone who is overly obsessed with the off road/4-whweel or even jeep culture, But I just could not understand how someone would install all these accessories and have absolutely no need for their use. I know many people put on lifts and larger tires; even I do that, but all the other stuff? To me that is just a complete waste. I could see this stuff on an older trail worthy jeep, but just to have it for “looks” is beyond me.

“To Each Is Own” …right?

I usually ask the jeep guys straight up if they wheel it or is it a mall crawler. Had a guy today confess it was a "pavement princess" his words, lol.

my personal experience has been the older the jeep, the more real the driver. Most new jeep drivers are usually more about the image, and having a convertible that wont get stuck in the snow, than wheeling.

Totally to each his own.

I know people who think I ruined Horton when I went truggy, but it fits my needs.

I know people who think I am an idoit for putting tons under the Jimmy and wanting to run 38s on a daily driver.

I know folks who think I am a moron for wanting to build an old Chevy as a tow rig, instead of spending the money on a only slightly less old truck to use as a tow rig.

I used to but don't any more begrudge guys who build mall crawlers. Build what you want.

I do

How gay. I understand a lift and some beefier tires. But the lights, winch, shovel, etc... is so lame.

well put. I used to get all bent out of shape and make fun of drivers that did things with their vehicles that I found stupid, until I realized there were plenty of people that thought the same thing about what I did.

I still think that the guy you described wasted a lot of money for nothing, but so long as it isn't my money, meh. hell, when he gets sick of it, someone is going to get some really primo used stuff on the cheap! :thumb:

Maybe this guy with the well prepped jeep is just being prepared for the Zombie hordes.:dunno:

Just think, in a few years when he is done with that Jeep it'll be a nice complete package ready to go for someone who buys it and wants to wheel.

Actually looking for this exact thing for my wife. She wants a wrangler to lightly wheel. All the tj's around me are beat the hell when they are even slightly built.

Either that or they want twice what I would pay for a jeep with stock axles and no lockers

I work at a jeep dealer. 99% of heavily modded jk's are pavement princess's.

I bought a 06 rubicon that was pretty heavily modded. It was really clean underneath. Obviously not wheeled. I only put 6k miles on it in the 2 years I had it, but it looked like it lived on the trail when I sold it. Atleast from underneath. Ha ha

I figure they just keep the industry alive. God knows we don't keep the major manufactures/stores in business. :dunno:

Around here its usually pretty easy to tell what trucks get used and which are mall crawlers.

I always like the looks I get drivin my junk thru town, nothin like seein a beat up old 4x with dents and scratches :pimp::haha:
