Hey all, I’ve been looking through older posts and trying to figure this out but having no luck. I have an 89 Jimmy with 5.7 tbi. The throttle pedal sticks at a certain point and I have to mash the pedal to get it to do anything more than idle along. Once past that point it all acceleration. No cruise. I’ve cleaned the cable and all points of contact. If I remove the cable from the tbi it falls to the floor and is completely loose. I’ve even changed the tbi unit with a new one that after the initial adjustment is also loose. The butterfly valves scraped a little but they’re ok now. But still haveing same issue. Can anyone suggest anything?

sounds like tha cable is cutting into the housing had it happen, take it completely out and inspect it

So when you are accelerating, and lift the throttle closes? What happens when you try to cruise?

I haven’t taken the cable unit off completely yet. But the plastic ends both look good and the cable seems fine. I sprayed some silicone lube down the tube and it feels loose. But it does have a loop in it that concerns me. Is there something I should specifically look for when checking it or just the plastic ends?

If the throttle pedal is physically sticking, and it's consistent, it should be easy to pinpoint. Truck off, disconnect it from the throttle body shaft. Does it still stick? Problem is cable or pedal. It doesn't? Problem is the throttle body or the cruise cable/linkage/servo. Which you can then disconnect and verify the problem resides there.

I'd fix the known, physical problem (sticky throttle) before I worried about anything else, like cruise.

that loop is where the cable decides to cut into itself and why you get what your experiencing

Ok guys so I removed the pedal assembly and cable. The pedal had some debris so cleaned that. Then I rerouted the cable and turned it over. It was completely free and mobile. I think it’s just too long. It reaches from the firewall to the alternator. Anyhow it made a noticeable improvement. I’ve got a new cable coming anyhow. Figured it wouldn’t hurt. I’ll drive it to work tomorrow and see if it cruises ok.

Anyone know the purpose of that loop....it would seem to bind things up by unnecessarily causing friction? It's a pretty tight loop, too. With most cables, they try to make the curves as gentle as possible. There's got to be a reason...

had it happen so many times i put a lokar cable in and no more trouble. as long as it is installed properly

My best guess is that they decided to make that the extra flex area for the cable. My '90 Jimmy has it. My old '79 K30 didn't have a loop.
:dunno:
