Would you run a 400 or go with the 465?

This is going to be a DD and im running 35's and 4.10's

Im going with one of these for sure just because i need something bulletproof. I know i will enjoy the deeper gears in the 465 but im not sure about how it much i will like it out on the trails. i like a lot of go pedal and i tend to swap between drive and reverse a LOT rocking it sometimes.

Could i still run my 208 behind it? i really dont like the idea of a 205.
i may hunt down a 241

Is the 400 lockup? and if not can i make it a lockup TC?

ive seen th400 208 combos, but not very often.... why dont you want to run a 205? stronger case, no chain... only think 208 has goin is the lower ratio, but meh.

I think there are a few companies that make special lockup converters for 400s but they are pricey... so basically no is the answer

Well a trans that runs higher rpm on the highway and doesn't have the low gears sounds like something I don't want.

But I've been through too many 700's so I have to do something.

I would rather run the 465 that at least will run a true 1:1 and put the 205 behind it and still have lower gears than my 700/208 combo.

Not sure that I'd argue the 700R4/208 setup is geared as deep as a 465/205, the opposite is more towards the truth (it's tough to make any concrete comparisons with auto transmissions). You could run a 465/208 setup or 465/241. Significantly deeper gearing with factory parts.

The 465 will run lower highway RPM's than the 400 and is more efficient as well.

Im saying the 700/208 is lower than the 400/205 or 208 combo.

With a 6.5:1 low on the 465 its hard to vet much lower.

If I do run the 465 I will most likely have torque management turned off on the 5.3 so it should be fun. Possibly if I run the t400 but I don't know how it will hold up..

Automatic transmission torque converters multiply their torque by roughly 2:1, that's a very rough estimate because they are variable and there are many different variables.

Yes, the 700/208 combo is geared deeper than the 400/205 or 400/208.

The 465/205 setup is not as deep as a 700/208 and will be in the same ball park as a 400/208.

With the tc slip it comes out about the same. But the highway driveability would be nice.

I wonder what my mpg's would look like with the t400.. im trying to get as much as I can as I commute around 30 minutes to work. And 6mpg's isn't cutting it. I also want to keep it nice and strong hence the 400 or 465.

Maybe ill just have to go 37's. ;)

Mileage wise, anything you do is a step backwards from the 700R4 other than a manual overdrive trans. That will likely not be worth swapping.

The real issue, why 6 mpg?

A carburated 355. :)

Im building up the 5.3 at the moment.
im just trying to.decide whether or not I want to go standard. I love driving stick but off road im not sure if i'll like it.

ill be running a sm465 np205 in my truck when i 6.0 swap it, but i prefer the 4 speed to an auto on the trails

Do you do much rock crawlig and ledges and stuff? That's what im into. Really technical and skinny pedal at the same time.

I like a sm465, okay, love it. But my buddy has a 700r4 from BTO that has dragged a sled at 8000rpms behind a zzz with no worries. $1900.00 though..

i dont do alot of real technical stuff, more like eastern wheelin goin threw the woods and up hills and threw creeks and streams and the occasional wet rock ledge to climb. personally i like the 4 speed better than a auto on the trails, i think your more in control and more aware of what your truck is doin when on the trail.

If your doin rock crawling your never gonna leave 1st gear anyways so whats the big deal? First to reverse isnt any more travel than on the column... Just gotta make use of that left foot at the same time. :thumb:
