what is the proper procedure for servicing an allison transmission in a 2006 chevy silverado with a 6.6 duramax? are there any special things i should know? i have a friend who wants to do his this weekend , but i have never done one on an allison tranny , thanks

Yes two filters. However Allison says not to replace the internal unless the pan is removed. Pan removal is not required to service the trans. When I did mine I did both.

so just change the external filter? he did say something about 2 filters ( 1 internal and 1 external) thats was the reason i was asking , what type fluid does the allison tranny take ? if replacing the internal is not necessary we wont do that one , as i have never done an allison ! and how much fluid is required to refill the transmission? sorry if i am asking stupid questions , just want to make sure he and i can do it without him having to pay the dealer 200.00 , which is what they quoted him! i would think changing the external and the fluid should suffice , correct me if i am wrong please! if not how hard is it to change the internal filter?? thanks for the info guys !!

check the spin on filter for a magnet on the inside were it threads on to the tranny. sometimes thay stick to the filter and not the center part of the spin on section.

swap it to the new filter.

That trans requires Dexron VI (not III, not Mercon V) and is fairly expensive. It will take around 8 quarts if you just pull the plug and change the spin on, around 11 if you drop the pan and change the internal filter. If you do it al plan on spending 130 dollars or more.

Make sure you transfer the magnet from the old spin on filter to the new.

cool thanks guys , so if he decides to do the internal filter too , is it somewhat like dropping the pan on a regular auto tranny , where you drop the pan and replace the filter and put it back together or is there more to it than that? thanks for the help guys !!

I would change both, but thats my opinion, just change the spin on at half intervals, like every 15K for the spin on and every 30K for the internal (that varies by performance parts and truck usege also).......

Oh and Allison sells a deeper factory pan, it holds a couple extra quarts and is a whole lot cheaper than those aluminum aftermarket ones......I would recommend one of those.......

so is it pretty much the same as an auto tranny ? for the internal filter i mean..... drop the pan , replace filter , re-install pan.or is it more involved than that??

Do not change the internal filter unless you re doing a rebuild. You just need to change the spin on filter when you do a drain.Takes about 9 quarts to do this. You should change the spin on every oil change (7500 miles). Get them from an Allision dealer not Chevy dealer thy are about half the price. Just don't forget to check the magnet.
