Here is the story. I was driving back from MN in my 08 D-max about two months ago and hit a bump in the road. The bump was actually a different asphalt lift as they were doing road construction just before Reno.
It's hard to explain, but the best way is to say that I pushed an imaginary clutch in while holding my foot on the gas. The thing jumped up in RPM's, then back down and off we went. It turns out that I was stuck in 5th gear and didn't really know it till I hit traffic going up Donner's pass.
Due to the construction, there was no where to pull off. I had to make it to the top of the pass, in what felt like a truck with the clutch going out.
Well we made it home and I took it to the dealership the next day. They were very puzzled that something was wrong with my Allison. They did there diagnostics and talked to GM and were told to put in a speed sensor. It cost me $1000.00 that trip to the dealership, but the truck seamed to work.
So this last weekend the wife and I were heading to Grass Valley on Sunday. I was taking back roads and hit another bump. Same thing happened with the RPM's and all. Turned around and came back home. When I went to back up in the driveway, I had no reverse.
The next morning about 6 am I took it to work with the engine light on. All seemed fine again except the light. I did some paperwork and waited for the dealership to open at 8:00. On the way there the light went off and the truck worked fine.
I get to the dealership and he lays down the same line about these Allison's just don't break. After two days there, and from what I gather a ton of driving the truck around, they can find nothing wrong with it. They did say that it shifted hard going into reverse one of the mornings though.
He said that they called GM again and were told to replace the valve body in the tranny. But he said that they are shooting from the hip and the $1600.00 that they want to charge me, may do nothing.
Looking for some help here. I really don't want to drop the money if it's not the problem. All in all, it's great having a bullet proof transmission until one breaks. It's seems that there are not a lot of people that know how to fix them if they are broke.
