Here is the story. I was driving back from MN in my 08 D-max about two months ago and hit a bump in the road. The bump was actually a different asphalt lift as they were doing road construction just before Reno.

It's hard to explain, but the best way is to say that I pushed an imaginary clutch in while holding my foot on the gas. The thing jumped up in RPM's, then back down and off we went. It turns out that I was stuck in 5th gear and didn't really know it till I hit traffic going up Donner's pass.
Due to the construction, there was no where to pull off. I had to make it to the top of the pass, in what felt like a truck with the clutch going out.

Well we made it home and I took it to the dealership the next day. They were very puzzled that something was wrong with my Allison. They did there diagnostics and talked to GM and were told to put in a speed sensor. It cost me $1000.00 that trip to the dealership, but the truck seamed to work.

So this last weekend the wife and I were heading to Grass Valley on Sunday. I was taking back roads and hit another bump. Same thing happened with the RPM's and all. Turned around and came back home. When I went to back up in the driveway, I had no reverse.

The next morning about 6 am I took it to work with the engine light on. All seemed fine again except the light. I did some paperwork and waited for the dealership to open at 8:00. On the way there the light went off and the truck worked fine.

I get to the dealership and he lays down the same line about these Allison's just don't break. After two days there, and from what I gather a ton of driving the truck around, they can find nothing wrong with it. They did say that it shifted hard going into reverse one of the mornings though.
He said that they called GM again and were told to replace the valve body in the tranny. But he said that they are shooting from the hip and the $1600.00 that they want to charge me, may do nothing.

Looking for some help here. I really don't want to drop the money if it's not the problem. All in all, it's great having a bullet proof transmission until one breaks. It's seems that there are not a lot of people that know how to fix them if they are broke.

First thought is you have some wiring grounding out someplace or the harness is chaffed through and the bumps are just aggravating it.Id take a good look at all the wiring first.

Very good possibility.

Thanks

I forgot to say in the OP, when they pulled the pan today, everything looked good.

Just a thought but the nsbu switch may have gone bad... that is the neutral start safety switch on the left hand side of the trans, it is plastic and gave me trouble on mine when we first got it, I went through 3 of them and finally got one from a alison dealer that fixed it.

They are only abought 100.00 bucks and easy to change.

I don`t know if thats the problem you got but it`s a thought.

Your best bet is to phone Mike at INGLEWOOD transmission and tell him what it is doing.

I would give you the link but I don`t know how.:doah::dunno: SORRY!

The Diesel Place has saved me alot of money.

Good luck!!!

HAHA! I have personally towed a lot of Allison equipped GM HD's in to the dealers that took a big crap. Everything from electrical to mechanical, as well as stock to modded trucks. Not impressed to say the least.

The first thing I would have done after spending the first 1000 and finding out it DID NOT fix the problem was to go back and get your money back or threaten to sue them over it. I would not be giving them ANY money to guess and throw parts at it until it's fixed or you'll be broke in no time. My thoughts are a bad electrical connection somewhere (possibly to the ECM).

i also think it would be an electrical issue. ive heard of newer trannys running them selves into the ground no matter how strong they r from a simple electrical issue. kind of a "master blaster" situation. (mad max)
