Almost

89 gmc jimmy. 350 tbi stock truck. I plan for this to be my off-road street legal crawler. I have been working at getting her running and road ready. It’s almost there every time I work on it, and when the wife calls I am almost done and headed home.
We tried a few more things over the weekend. Everything we are reading says that if it is staying strongly in gear without slipping it's either got to be the governor or the TV cable. We tried adjusting the cable a few more times just to make sure we were doing it right and we are fairly confident we are. We also pulled the governor again and confirmed that when the output shaft turns the governor is turning as well.

We are kinda at a loss so I called up @bigblock72 . He is fairly confident that the trans itself is good, given our symptoms, but we must be missing something. So this weekend we are going to drag it down to his shop so he can get a look at it.
Yeah, if the transmission had an issue it would try to shift out of first and wind up like it's in neutral and then fall back to first.
Just had one like this that I got fixed.

Alright, so we are going to rebuild the transmission. Plan is to pull it this weekend, so it's time to order parts.

@bigblock72 Said he'd give us a parts/tools list. Any other advice is welcome.

Get it torn down when you can, (I can help you over the phone if needed) post pictures and I will get a list together for you.:saweet:

No special tools are needed for tear down. 8, 10, 13mm sockets. 24 inch prybar, large mallet, snap ring pliers, screwdrivers etc.

Well it seems I am messing some electrical and I didn’t see an auxiliary tube/auxiliary accumulator valve is there a reason some one gets rid of these??

What @Fullerton is trying to say is, it looks like someone cut the wires inside the tranny that lead to a plug on the outside. I think it might be VSS? I didn't know what it was used for in 1989, but some stuff online suggested it might help with shifting?

Also, the trans appears to be an '85 without an auxiliary accumulator. Any reason to look for a trans that has one, or just run as is?

I looked some stuff up that said the wire I am missing helps regulate shift pressure and torque converter lock up. Could this be my issue of the truck not shifting?

The torque converter lock-up solenoid is what you are seeing with the wires cut. VSS would be on the transfer case.
I don't know why those wires would be cut, I do know that it is possible to get TCC without electrical control, but I have no experience in what is involved.
But TCC shouldn't affect shifting of the gears, just locking if the torque converter. It could affect overdrive, but I am not sure. I have only experienced no overdrive from being low on oil.

Oh, and I was told to always use transmissions that were '87 or newer. I believe that is when the auxiliary valve body came in to use. But I believe that in '90, the main valve body changed to a better one, and I don't remember if or how the auxiliary valve body was in them. I haven't had the pan off of my '70 in years, which I know was a '91 case and such.
