OK, I am going to order the CS144 140 Amp alternator for my 85. What is involved in the swap? I know I will have to fab a bracket for mounting... but what else is there? Like a connector? Will it plug in or will I have to cut the end and splice mine on? Also, what about the wiring that is there? Is it heavy enough to handle the increased Amps? Fuses? Etc.
Thanks.

Mike

I installed the factory large case 180A (CS144 I think) altenator on my 454 and I just needed to trim the bracket. I measured the difference in the distance from the mounting ear to the adjusting ear and trimed that much off of the factory bracket. I then took a jigsaw to cut the slot for the adjusting ear. You can't tell the difference by looking at the bracket. I had an altenator shop make a connector so that the altenator works just like the factory one did.

The factory wiring will not support 140 amps. I ran an 8 gauge cable to the distribution block on the firewall and a 4 gauge wire to the battery. The 8 guage wire will carry 100 amps for a short period of time and 75 amps continuious. I suppose you could double the 8 gauge wire but then you still need to get the power to your battery and winch.

Has anyone done this? Id appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Mike
