How big of an alternator should I go with to support my 12000 pound milemarker I just picked up? What high amp stockers can I use from other applications? Also can I go to big?

Here's another thread with good alternator information. http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=241070

Operating the winch is going to be a combination of a good battery and good charging system. My Ramsay 9500 pulls around 430 amps at full pull. I am personally upgrading to a 94 amp alt with a new battery from the stock 37 amp alt.

Here's what the power draw shows for my winch:

Load ->........No load.... 2000# ..4000# ...6000# ...8000# ... 9500#
amp draw ->.. 97 .........180 .......260...... 335....... 395...... 430

A replaced the 80-ish amp stock alternator on my truck (v-belt) with a CS144 (140 amp). No problems so far, but you do have to make sure to keep the belt tight.

A decent battery is usually sufficient for the typical trail recovery since you only need 5-10 ft. of pulling time. Though if you are doing serious mud I can see longer extractions.

Also whats the deal with this wire you need for the cs144? I have the delco part number, does it just adapt my alt plug to the cs144 plug?
