hello, I have a 85' k5 with a 305 cid auto stock stuff for now. my question is is it possible to swap a same year alt from a caddy or a impala? i was lookling at auto parts stores catolog and notice some for a caddy and a impala having 108 amps. the only noticeable differance i can tell from a picture is the regulator plug is both 12:00 where my stocker k5 is at 3:00. i don't know if the extra amps will smoke anything or will it plug and play? any suggestions? thank you.

you don't want to just get a higher amp output from jegs or summit? And they are one wire hook-up.
What brand and price are the ones at the stores?

Most of those should work. I was able to run a 88+ truck or 92and up burban alternator with a different front housing to make bolt right up to stock small block. The wire adaptor makes it plug into the factory harness. Which is cool because a factory alt can be put on at any time.

And I the pretty sure the factory amps are around 105, and can easily be make to put out more.

Check your local starter and alternator shop if you still have one

my k5 has an alt from a 80s cutless thats 95 amps. bolted right in. there is a local alternator rebuild company by me that will take youre alternator and but the higher output guts in it for the same $ as a stocker.
