I assume you are talking about the two field wires. The red goes to battery power and the other I think it is brown goes to the dash. The brown wire goes to an idiot light which is connected to an ingnition wire. When the engine is shut off it shuts off the field in the alternator to keep from draining the battery.
On the 87, the large red wire and the rust colored one in the plug go straight to the battery via a fusible link, the brown does go to the idiot light in the dash...see attachment.
