Alternator Wiring Question

I am in the middle of installing a 350 in an 83 K10 I picked up a few weeks ago. Now the wiring in this thing is fubared and I am trying to fix it all.

Question is, there are 2 wires coming off of a plug that goes into the alternator. I know one goes to the charging gauge(figured that one out) but where does the second originally go? It is wired now so it looks like it went to the post on the back of the alternator so can it work like this and I just run a wire from the post to the battery?

The other wire is the field wire, I think.

Field wire or some people call it the sense wire. It tells the alternator how much to put out depending on the load.
