the wire with the ring was on the "BAT" stud on the alt. the wire that was cut off was well...cut off :doah: i dont know whare it is supposed to go.

then one goes here (on the right) and the other goes to the fuse block.

so what is right and what is wrong? whare does the one thats cut off go? i think im gonna try and get a repair manual tomorrow after work to see if i can decode some schematics  any help is greatly appreciated!

The wiring looks correct, except for the cut wire. It should either go to the battery or the starter (battery cable). It really doesn't matter which one.

ahhh ok. ill crawl under and take a look. the starter wiring was next on the list, its pretty bad also.

so the wire on the left of the distribution block (3rd pic above) already goes down to the starter, so i still dont know whare the cut wire is supposed to go. that explains how the truck has been charging all these years i have had it. no point in having both wires to the starter right?

also how would i find out whare wires are supposed to go after they come through the firewall? i have 5 wires that were cut, not going any whare.

Please for the sake of your electrical system replace all of those wires and connectors you just pictured. Actually if the rest of you truck's wiring is that hacked, you should probably just replace the whole wiring harness. I did and next to my lockers it was the best mod I have done. No more chasing shorts, slow cranking, and no more spahgetti under the dash.

If the wires were connected like you say, it was hooked up like a 1-wire alternator. Connecting it in a more conventional way is better for your charging system.

There's really only three wires you need to deal with:

1. The big lug on the back of the alternator marked "bat" goes directly to the battery on early trucks, or on later models( 73+) to the starter motor, or any distribution block that leads back to the battery. It's the charging wire for the battery.

2. The big red wire coming off that connector in the last picture connects to the power distribution block on your firewall. It's a voltage detection lead to tell the regulator to "regulate" how much charging to let the alternator do.

3. The other wire coming off the connector is the exciter wire and it goes back to your fuse block and to an ignition source to tell the alternator to start working.

4. There's also a ground lead onthe alternator, but I'm sure you know where that goes.
