Did a serch didn't find much info does anybody have or know which alternator would fit into my burb? Need a high amp 100+ know that GM at some time made a factory one that will fit. Its a BB chevy motor typical setup. Just would like to know what one to ask for when I go buy a new one today.
 
Looked at the search results for Transport and still didn't answer my question. Yes the Pontiac transport had a high amp alernator, however changeing the pulley and splicing the wires aren't my idea of a swap. If I was building something then yes it would work but I'm putting it in my daily driver and I just need the highest one that will bolt in.
 
i believe it is SI style alternator, the older style are SI series....if u search jegs or somewhere u can probably find one for you.
 
Jeg's or Summit will have some that are "stock." Do a little research on a CS-144 and you'll probably find one cheaper than stock and give you a couple of options as well in idle & maximum amp output.:D
 
The Transport one is a drop-in on smallblocks. If you can't splice two wires, matching color, then any big alternator may give you trouble ;)

However, it's moot 'cuz it does NOT drop in on bigblocks ...at least, it didn't on my '74.

As mentioned, you have lots of options including purpose-built ones.

I am doing a CS130 alternator on my '75 K10 w/350. I got it from a '92-'95 Caddy. Has a 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock mounting. There are a few mods that are SUPER easy to handle. If you can wait until tomorrow, I will post EXACTLY what it entails.

Well I found a few that work, 1988 Suburban with all the bells and whistles is a 94 amp with a serpentine pulley. Change pulley and it bolts in, not the one that I got. 1978 Chevy Caprice with all power, 100 amp its bigger and has a different mounting bracket. part number 7157 at checker might have a A in front of it.

So instead of going the easy way, the 94 amp which the auto parts store would have changed the pulley for me I went the hard way for the extra 6 amps :rolleyes:

Modified the bracket and cut the old bottom bolt bracket to use as a big washer and bolted the alternator in. I had some too short wiring issues but other then that it fit fine.

I did find out the nice free Optima yellow top I got is not holding a charge for some reason, but it was free:D

The reason that I modified the top bracket was the new alternator is 1 1/2 inches bigger and the top bracket would not have let it fit. With some serching the factory bracket would fit a small block but not the big block, this is in a big block.

I've been through four "all new, lifetime warranty" NAPA alternators in four years and I think my current one is on its way out. It charges, but only at 12.4 volts.

I can't imagine it being anything in my truck, it isn't draining the battery while it sits.

So far I can't convince NAPA to warranty this one (they claim it has to charge more than 13.1V to pass their test :rolleyes:) but the second I can warranty it in CO I will just get my money back and buy an aftermarket one. Every other alternator failure I've had has been far from home :mad:

My advice would be to get an aftermarket (new) alternator.
 
Well the saga has ended for now!
Turns out that the Alternator was good so was the replacement that I put on my wireing had melted a bit around the junction box three of four bit the the big one. So I drove home with no alternator in the truck, ran fine :D. got home and put a F--d part in re ran all the wires that had anything to do with charging or starting and fixed it :D
