Prepare for another time wasting post.

Ok, Where do you guys think an 18 year old should be technologically today? Having a smart phone? tablet? lap top?

Me? the most advanced thing I have is the Ipod I have because none of my vehicles have radios, and I haven't really got it's touch screen figured out yet. I don't even want a cell phone, I don't think someone should be so accessible all the time.

Everyone at the High School thinks I'm bass-ackwards, and can't even fathom how I can even exist without these things.

I don't like almost any modern music, if you looked at my ITunes, you would see stuff like Blue Oyster Cult, Charlie Daniels, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Waylon Jennings, Blackfoot, and the I think the newest thing I have on there is Jamey Johnson.

I would be happier with a brand new 1974 K20, than a brand new 2014 K2500, (not that I would say no to the new truck, I'll happily accept)

I like shag carpet, I like carburetors, I like 70's 80's society, (I not a hippie either, I very strongly Republican) I even like trucks done up in a 70's aftermarket style, white spoke steel wheels, Chrome roll bars, Push bars with flood lights, I like true west coast mirrors on 3/4 and one tons, I HATE plastic on vehicles, I like chrome, I like white steel bumpers too, I like saddle blanket seat covers, I like CB's, and you see where I'm going with this.

Point is, I think I was born in the wrong generation. Hell, I'm listening to Jerry Reed right now, Redneck in a Rock and Roll bar

Your giving me hope,as far as the "next generation"...:waytogo:

There's nothing wrong with liking what you like...or who you like listening too...Jerry Reed huh?...well,you have good taste in guitar pickers..too bad he and old Chet Atkins are no longer with us--few of any teens even know who they were, unless their dads liked them..when it comes to talent and music, they dont make 'em like they used too,was never so true,in my opinion..

I'm no fan of change, new electronic devices, computer controlled engines, etc, just like you...I dont like the fact your considered an outcast if you dont like all the "new stuff" they keep coming up with,or dont want any part of a new vehicle--I'd rather stick with what I know and trust (they were bad enough!).....heck,I only got a cell phone a few months ago--still can barely make a call or answer one with it--and if the dam thing rings and I dont want to answer it,I cant even see which frigging button to push to shut the dang thing off--I usually end up pushing two buttons at once its so tiny, and calling portugal by accident ..:doah:..

A cell phone is nice--IF your stranded and need help...or you must remain in constant contact with someone for work,etc...but they also can kill people, when they talk on them while driving or text, and get distracted too..

A computer is nice--sometimes...it allows you to be "friends" with people all over the world, who share similar interests..you can meet some people you'd otherwise never know, and can even socialize online with some celebrities that you'd only get to see once in a blue moon too...when everyone behaves, its great!..

Unfortunately being on social media also exposes you to all kinds of deviants who can make your life a living hell,if someone decides to start harassing or slandering you online, they hold all the cards, they know its dam near impossible for you to track them down,so they are free to destroy your privacy and sense of security..your tracked everywhere you go online today..just today I noticed the ads on a website I go on often changed to just what I happened to look up on google a few minutes prior,so someone was "watching"...I hear everything you ever did online can be found on search engines too..from day one!..:yikes:..

I often think things were better back 30 years ago...sometime progress really isn't--if you know what I mean...back then you had to earn things, wait to get something, today its all so instantaneous,we are too dam smart for own own good sometimes..sure,some things have come a long ways, like vehicles, but that does not mean they are better...for everyone..some of us like old stuff..

Probably, but since I'm not yet a paid member, (plan to change that soon)
I couldn't post there.

Also, nobody talks to anybody anymore, everybody communicates through typing, I'm not a people person by any means, but damn, I want to speak to a human being every now and again.

Also, I do have a way to get ahold of people should things go wrong, I have CBs in all my vehicle, I have a base station at home, and all of my friends have CBs, and two of them have base stations as well.
I know their not as reliable as phones, but they have never let me down.

If your ever in the area, you can find us on channel 23.

We would be best friends, I'm 23 and the newest truck I have ever owned was a 1991 s10 only because at the time my dad wouldn't give me his 87 chevy but everything after that has been 73-87 chevy trucks. Every truck I have owned had a cb in it. New country sucks d***, my friends think I'm weird too

Im a mixed bag on this subject. Ive always been really into technology and fairly up and up on it BUT I still feel I was born in the wrong time. Im 24 and I really feel like I would have fit in better in the 60s/70s being my age in the car culture. I like pretty much all the music from the era and just feel that even if I still had knowledge of technology I was leaving behind I wouldnt care.

thinkin i would fit in well with this crowd too, im 21 and the more i think about it, i think i would be way happier in 50s-60s-70s time period. I cant stand how everything is made out of plastic and it breaks upon first dissassembly. I have a cell phone but its not a smart phone and most of the time i leave it at home. While all my friends are going to movies and spending all their money on "new-age" entertainment, im wrenching in my driveway having a blast. For me its more of a simplicity thing, i think everyone is just getting too busy.

Dont even get me started on how many times someone has told me hey lets hang out, so you go someplace and sit there and 4 of my friends have their phones out and are on facebook or something, and im sitting there with nothing to do. Couldnt they just do that at home? If im gonna hang out, well then lets do something, go somewhere, anything....

...but times are different and you cant be stuck in the past for the most part, so yes i live in 2014, but just because its the new fad or everyone else has one, doesnt mean i need to. And yes a new chevy truck gets good gas mileage and is possibly more reliable, but my 78 chevy is payed off, very cheap to repair and if i get stranded on the side of the road there is most likely something i can coble together to at least get me home. So im not against technology necessarily but i always weigh the pros with the cons...

rant over

Meh, everyone looks back at the past with rose colored glasses.

Martin

Im that way to a point, im 27 and still dont know how to work on a computer or use Microsoft Word for example. But im sort of technologically proficient. I can use a Snap On scanner and understand the different operations it can do. But the only reason I can do that is because its what Im interested in. If I was into something other than motorsports, I doubt I could use one.

I also do have Facebook, but I rarely use it, and dont really care about most functions it provides, I use it mainly to keep in touch with my sister who lives in Nazifornia and see her pictures and such.

But as far as vehicles and new age stuff goes, I find the LS swap a terrible choice for an offroad vehicle, there is far to much stuff to go wrong and leave it a 2 ton road block. Now, I also cant stand carbs, so the TBI is a perfect mix of new and old, and I own 2 of them. Sadly, my "offroad" rig is the nicest vehicle I actually own.

I wouldn't say that its rose tinted glasses, I know there have always been problems in the world,
I just think it would be better if we thought of the Communists as something we need to defeat, and not as a bank we owe trillions of dollars to.
If gas was less than a dollar a gallon, not almost $4. I know theres inflation, but a dollar in the mid 70's Is worth something like $5 now.

I like new mixed with the old. Love all the LSX swaps going on. Love the old body styles with modern drivetrains. Love that 500+ hp can be made streetable and still get decent mileage...

My son is 13 and has an iphone and a laptop and can drive my sm465 burb. Progression in our hobby will keep it alive and passed down to the next generation. My .02

I can look back and say "Points suck" I think I sill have a dwell meter somewhere. Carbs needed to adj quite often. Spark plugs fouled ( See "Points Suck and carb adj ) Belts needed tightening and replaced almost yearly...Hoses weren't far behind.
If you broke down or got stuck....Start walking and look for a working pay phone ( Better have change)
What to research some info or order parts for a project car or truck.....Better start collecting magazines and catalogs and spend days, weeks, months reading and calling the manufactures....And hope you get the right info.

Yes times were simple back then....Slow, but simple.....I for one embrace modern tech.

Yep, some things were cool looking back with rose colored glasses, but there have been some great technologies I appreciate. As mentioned, points, carbs and v-belts bring the suxx0r. Bias ply tires...sucked hard too, but at least they wore out fast.

Rotary dial phones, really cool until you have a phone number like 497-9997 like I did as a kid. Took 4 and a half minutes just to dial it FFS.

4 channels on TV and three sucked mostly, plus each one needed an antenna adjustment. VCR, forget it.

High school math, all long hand, in pencil on actual paper.

Parts for your car, really any classifieds ad...buy the rag, get the magnifying glass and spend hours searching. No search filters. Then you had to actually phone someone, hope they were home (no answering machines) etc.

On the good side we spent all summer outside, til dark every day playing as kids. Video games were at arcades, and was a special trip.

Going on a trip somewhere really was a learning experience, we didn't have the intardweb and youtube to check everything out beforehand. You didn't meet people online before ever meeting them in person. When you got where you were going everything was new.

Gas cheap? Yeah, and pay was low. Even though it's spendy now, I find it much more affordable compared to income.

I say there was good and bad then, like there is today. I wouldn't say things were any safer then than now, just different things to kill or maim then. Same with the drugs and other crap...same but different. Human nature was no different then as it is now.

Music is kinda moot. There was some good/great stuff, as there is today. There was a crap ton of crap too, as there is today.

I say live in the present, but accept/embrace only what makes sense to you, what you enjoy, what makes your life better. I'm not a trend follower, I'm not a technophobe. I evaluate each new thing as it fits me or doesn't and choose to live accordingly. I think one day when you approach 50 you may look back on the early teens of this century with some fond reminiscence.

My two cents from an "old" guy.

For the record, I hate drive throughs. They just seam really impersonal. And I think that leads to more orders being f'd up. And I refuse to talk to my phone, I've seen Terminator; I know what happens next.

And on a musical note, if I hear one more goddamn country song blathering on about beer, or tailgates; I'm gonna shoot myself.

I think their was a better time and I call it BI, befor internet. dont get me wrong it has its place, but if I remember correctly thats about the time people quit physically talking to each other.

I agree and disagree in many categories. I am very good with technology, I'm almost a computer science graduate and play computer games and surf on forums as and can use the tools at hand very proficiently. But this is generally reserved for the appropriate time, like not when I'm out to dinner or talking with friends. I put my phone on silent, face down so I have to pick the phone up noticeably to even check the time. I like working on my square bodied Chevys, and just got rid of my gmt400 Tahoe for an 87 tbi plow truck. I like country of all sorts, New and old.

I think the most important and also most overlooked thing about technology is to know when it's appropriate to use. There are situations where you just shouldn't be playing angry birds or checking Facebook.

I'm 24, I'd rather my fuel injected vehicles than a damn carburetor. :D

In my defense, I daily drove a carb'd truck for 5 years, the smell of raw fuel and single digit mileage is a thing of the past.. and I pray I never return to dealing with it daily..

Nothing wrong with enjoying older music, in my opinion MOST of the music today is hacked together with no raw talent.

I think if everyone were to leave their technology at home, because 99% of us do not need to be that accessible, the world would be a better place.
