Long story short a shop that I do alot of work at and dyno all my stuff at swapped a 360 into a 70s cj jeep and the owner didn't want the low mileage 304 that came out. It was torn down and now it just sitting. They just want to get rid of it. Is it worth anything to a jeep guy? Should I just let it go to the iron?
 
If it's free you should be able to make a few bucks :D
 
Isn't the same thing as a 305 chevy? Can you make money on one of those?
 
If it's free, it will at least bring scrap, even a 305 :rolleyes:

Some jeep guys are real purists and would never want to re- power with anything but AMC, so I honestly think it could pull a few bucks advertised in the right place. I'm amazed by some of the guys on the full-size jeep forums, my brother has a wagoneer and sends me some links to threads once in awhile. Listening to guys trying to tell purists why an LS swap makes sense, then seeing their reasons not to are funny :D
 
ehhhh....

I had a 304 in my CJ5. This is a great motor, but frankly the 258 I6 had about the same torque and was a more reliable motor with better fuel economy. Also, if you're looking for a truck engine, the 360 or 401 from AMC were far more desirable. The 304's are kinda tired....ESPECIALLY when emissions came around it about put them out of their misery. Sad, a great little low-tech motor. Also, AMC parts are getting harder and harder to find where 305 parts are everywhere...JMO.
 
Idk I may save it just cause. I was eyeballing the heads for my "someday" imca hobby stock with an AMC.
 
Weren't you trying to unload junk???

Or did giving me that TPI harness clear up enough room for about five more engines.

Too many decent things are getting scrapped now,instead of being offered to someone who needs and wants them....I've been sickened to see what gets scrapped around here lately,including several vehicles and engines and others with good parts a friend just hauls in to a scrap yard,without bothering to try listing the stuff on CL they still have that are getting hard to find in ANY condition..................................................................................................................................................................................................I know I'd have a hard time just finding a decent carbed chevy motor now,you almost never see any that run in a junkyard now--if one can be had they want at least 400 bucks for it.!....an AMC engine would be like hens teeth ,if someone was in need of one for an old Gremlin or a Jeep,I would guess they would give 300+ bucks for one IF they could find one in useable condition at a salvage yard...(doubtfull!)....I would at least advertise it on CL and see if there is any interest..scrap it ,you'll be lucky to get 40-50 bucks ..
 
I save lots of stuff, I am just afraid years of mice piss (where I can store it) will wreck it and it would end up scrap anyway. I hate to see it go to the iron that is why I asked, still I trip over some much stuff now as it is.
 
To save most of my chevy motors that run or are good I sell them to my machinest since he will disassemble them and sell them as parts or as rebuilt motors. I bet he has 100 or more 350s right now. Doesn't make alot on them mostly just the machine work.
 
Mice wont be a problem if you store it right--I'd take off the carb and put a peice of sheet metal over the intake opening,bolt it right to the carb holes..then if it still has a y-pipe,block that off with a freeze plug,or cap off the manifolds with sheet metal at the studs where the pipes would bolt up.............................................................................................................................................................................................................I "stored" a 500 Caddy motor that way in my shed for over 10 years,and my garden tractors right next to it were infested with mice that built nests in their engines blower housings...I neglected to plug the y-pipe with more than just a old rag I stuffed into it though,and the freeze plugs on one side had been removed to drain the coolant...despite these tempting "mouse holes",a friend who bought the engine off me about a year ago said he hasn't seen and evidence of mice being in it anywhere,but there was plenty of shelled nuts lying all over the intake ................................................................................................We found the best way to keep an engine in good shape if being stored away a long time,is to put it in a 55 gallon drum (if it'll fit!) and fill it with drain oil and cover it up...its messy ,but it'll never have rusted cylinder walls or seize up while its napping...some guys I know put them in plastic tubs or totes and fill the engine right to the top of the valve covers with used oil .....................................................................................................I bet if you advertised that engine,it will sell fairly quickly...I recall us having a hard time locating an engine for an IHC dump truck we had at the junkyard,and it was pure luck someone came in to scrap a '74 "Levi" Gremlin that had a decent running 304 with a 2 bbl carb in it--other than that engine,all we could find were well worn 345's from junk school busses that sat for years and were probably not worth the effort to pull and get running again...despite the "tiny" 304,we used that 1600 Loadstar a lot to haul tons of junked rims and tires to scrapyards,and it actually did pretty well...didn't get any speeding tickets with it though...:D
 
It has be disassembled or it would be different. They were going to rebuild it but never got too it and just want it gone. On a side note you all should be happy I am rounding up 305s for 305 sprint car duty so even some of them get to live a little longer.
 
If u got room, free is free. If u cant get any biters on it u can always scrap later. Id rather give parts away then send them to be melted down to make a prius :rolleyes:
 
but soon I will have a whole trailer of Iron including a k30 maybe. I will save it just cause. I can wipe the cylinders and crank with grease.
