Hey,

I found this engine on ebay.com :

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2556c9e9d3

It seems to be the new, improved AMG block. I already contacted this seller if this engine would fit into my truck and he already replied:

"The pan on the Military AMG engines will not fit.
These engines are for the civilian pickup trucks, so they will fit, however the 6.2 fuel system will not fit onto this engine.
We make a conversion engine using this new block, that allows full use of all your 6.2 external parts $4590.
"

What do you think about that? Did I get it right that they are using the new, improved AMG block and buidling a conversion engine?

Greetings

Florian

As I remember this the external locations of parts is the same. By that I mean where and how things bolt up. I don't know about the accesories though. But those aren't killer to find. My question is more about the electronics on that thing. In short marrying the truck to the engine, I know its doable, but are you able and you do live a long way from the local junkyard here

Hey,

thanks for your help. Well, the truck originally was a diesel, got everything I'd need, have several new/used 6.2 harnesses and so on, parts shouldn't be the problem I think. Just not sure about how much money would be necessary to have a custom oil pan built (I already know how to do it though, I found an excellent write-up of that issue on the dieselpage)

Well, the seller is slightly wrong. Your 6.2 parts WILL fit, unless you have the '82 coarse injectors. Still, on a new engine you should have your injectors and pump rebuilt anyway. Injector lines will fit but may need to be tweaked slightly due to a change in injector angles.

I would be worried about the $4200 deal "based on this block". If you're spending the money get a complete gen-u-ine AMG long block. Personally, I would feel more comfortable buying direct from AMG or from one of their known reputable retailers like Peninsular rather than some guy on ebay...

Also, the P400 isn't much more money than the standard Optimizer 6500...

Hey Max,

you are absolutely right, I won't buy me a new engine for a lot of $ without replacing the pump and the injectors ;-) ( By the way, :waytogo::waytogo::waytogo: the engine you built is really awesome!:bow::bow: great work!congrats!)
What mechanical IP do you think would be best for my truck? I'm trying to figure out, how much $ I have to add to the basic costs for the longblock. Think a rebuilt IP will cost me up to 700 $ ...

ps.
as you mentioned in your thread, buying the engine directly from GEP or peninsular engines really seems to be the best. The ebay-seller 6.5l seems to have something to do with international diesel which has quite a bad reputation all across several diesel foums.

Thanks! I'm kicking myself in the butt for selling it, but I really, really want a P400. That engine is bad to the bone

Good question. It depends on which engine you ultimately get, but you can never go wrong with a DB2-4911. Having a non-4911 pump built to those specs is spendy (about a grand or so around here), but no more so than if all the same parts had to be replaced in a 4911 pump. A 4911 will be maxed out at around 230-250HP, so it depends on how much power you want. A DB4 will go to 340+, but they are pricey.

Hey,

thanks again for your really great help and information! I want to run the P400 without a turbo the first time (but I'm thinking about adding a turbo later on)

How much HP can I expect with the DB2-4911 in a NA 6.5 diesel? 170 hp + ?
Lee Swanger squeezed approximately 190HP out of his n/a 6.5 Diesel with the DB2-4911, but his engine is/was highly customized.

A 4911 will over fuel a NA engine. You really need a turbo on there to go with that pump.

hey max,

me again ;-) did you take a look at that link? I'm still unsure if that engine is an optimizer or a p400? I somewhere read that the p400 longblocks are listed for about 6000 $? Maybe the one on ebay is one. the casting is by navistar according to the link block casting number is 506

It's an Optimizer (if it is indeed really an AMG engine). In the 4th pic you can see the regular stamped steel oil pan.
