Has anyone every mounted an ammo can in the back rear corner of their bed then cut something like a 3in hole in the side.

You could load the chain from the top then close the lid and when the time comes, pull the chain through the hole. I was thinking you could fab up a cap to put over the hole when not in use.

Maybe it would be more trouble than just climbing up and taking the chain out the top.

Any thoughts?

Them ammo cans are pretty strong. I think it would be fine the way it is. Those things take quite a beating in everyday military use. But if you wanting to you could cut the hole and put a piece of thick rubber that is slit and fastened around the edges of the hole to pull the chain through and might help keep it kind of closed up.

I think you are over thinking this. just reach in the top for the chain. if you have a lot of chain in the box its own weight is going to be a factor in how hard it is to pull out from the bottom.

I keep chain with me when wheeling but use a strap for all pulling. chain can be dangerous. I only use it for winching with my hi-lift since it does not stretch like a strap or to chain broken parts of my truck back together. both of those uses do not necessitate speed in removing the chain from its box.

remember, keep it simple.

What cant you do with a ammo box?

I have a ammo box that fits 2-3/8"x20ft I use to attatch it to the trailer. It is a tight fit but works real well. I dont think you could pull the chain thru a hole but if there was only one chain in the box you may be able to.
I love ammo boxes I have four mounted in the rig one for each seat. That way each person has some water/dust/mud resistant place to put there keys/wallets/cameras/cell phones etc.

I like the idea of a waterproof place for wallets and phones. I guess behind the seat would be about the best place for one in a pickup.

You could like it with padding to keep it from scratching things, also.

For my log chains Ive always just taken a gallon oil or antifreeze jugs. I cut the area around the cap bigger and just leave a hole. Drop the middle of the chain is so the hooks on either end get hooked on the whole makes it easy to grab. Nice thing about those jugs too is they are pretty sturdy and they have handles
