So the real issue is screwing aluminum into aluminum.
Trying to put aluminum -6AN adapters into an aluminum trans filter bracket. They are both 3/8 npt. I am using a teflon lubricant and thread sealant.
They'll go in half-way EASILY, by finger, and then just stop. I can't get them to go in any further. I can't tell there's anything wrong with the adapters, the threads look fine, and there is a lot more thread down inside the trans filter bracket. I can't see anything wrong with the threads inside the bracket, and I have the same result in both the in and out holes of the adapter. Even the regular tube attachments they sent with the adapter will only go in half way.

Am I not using enough lube? Heat? Wrong lubricant?

thanks

What are you expecting the fitting to sit all the way in the housing?

If so its never going to happen. The threads are tapered and clearly the tran piece is not tapped open as much as the fitting.

That being said are you sure they are both pipe thread? A lot of times, like on fuel rails, the piece being threaded into will have a straight thread and than an o ring or copper washer on the end.

I would suspect this as being the issue but I can clearly see that is a CHEAP adapter that may just not have been tapped properly for NPT. He did say that even the fittings that came with the adapter will only go in half way. To the OP, NPT thread will NEVER thread in "all the way" and if they do then the tapped hole was tapped too deep.

So here's the adapters, mine, which is a Russell Performance 3/8th NPT to -6AN.

The stock fitting is a 3/8th NPT barb fitting.

They both screw in by hand to the level shown. The stock one doesn't screw in any further - its just a bit shorter then the Russell Performance.

So you guys are saying that this is as far as they are SUPPOSED to screw in?

Its designed to get tight somewhere along the threads, yes. They never screw all the way in. If you desired more thread engagement then you could tap the female hole further opening the taper up more.

Yep
I have the same adapter on my blazer running the same AN fittings you are. All is good and they look the same IIRC

Does the fitting screw in and stop suddenly like it bottoms out or does it just get progressively tighter? Progressively tighter is correct, stopping abruptly like it bottomed out is wrong.

Not to sidetrack too much, but what is the purpose of this setup? It looks like the filter you have could just be plugged in directly. I've considered doing a bypass filter like this, but your pic doesn't look like a bypass setup.

yea, they get progressively tighter. i thought they would screw all the way in. it looks so weird, with almost half of the threads showing. looks like i got lazy and didn't feel like threading it the rest of the way.
thanks yall.

looks like just a remote oil filter because the transmission torque bar is in the way?

Y pipe won't allow a fullsize filter in, only a shorty, and even then it's a PITA to remove.
