Anyone here have any ideas how to clean governor gear chunks out of the tail cavity WITHOUT dropping the transfer case? I probably already know the answer but I'm hoping desperately for some ingenious trick. I already have the valve body out to find and replace a broken spring but I don't see any access holes to the gov area. I'm getting REAL tired of "700 weekends" with 'helping hands' that never show up.

yeah that's what i figured....guess i'll go fabricate some kind of jack setup to support the TC for a lovely Sunday clusterf*ck project....

How about a shop vac? Duct tape a smaller tube to the regular hose if you need to. Fish the pieces out of the vac and put the gear together like a puzzle to be sure you have everything.

...try a lint lizard...:thumb:

 Thanks Blue! I gave that a few seconds of thought earlier today too,now to find some lint lizard or chunk monkey type materials

Well I bought a 5 gallon shopvac and did the tube trick...got some pieces out but had already lost some when I drained the pan so no puzzle construction....can't quite convince myself it's completely clean though

I doubt the missing bits will ever get into any of the moving parts, most likely they'll sink to the bottom of the tail housing and stay there...I dont think they can get into the rest of the tranny from there either,a seal and bushing is in the way.

When I replaced the oil pan in my '69 GTO,I found the little "cup" that the pushrod seats in lying in some goo in the bottom of the pan, along with the little clip that held it into the lifter...also found a pile of nylon cam gear teeth and some remnants of valve stem seals in there too!...you'd think they would have gotten stirred up and sent thruout the engine after the oil warmed up,but I bet they been in there a long time before I owned it--and whoever replaced the lifter that pumped up too much never bothered to find out where the missing peices went!...the oil pump screen was full of cam gear teeth and valve stem seal chunks too..

So you dont think it's likely the high pressure fluid will send a piece thru the new gov and shaft gears? I thought the pressure may lift and float the pieces, I was wondering if pieces from the first gov gear were what did in the 2nd one. Of course it may have just been the 'mystery' governor I took a chance on:doah:

I'm not a tranny expert by any means, but I dont think there is any high pressure oil being fed to the tailshaft area ..maybe you can find some pictures of a 700r4 on google images with the tail housing removed and tell if there is or not...

Someone else here like Greg Ducato would know for certian ...

It might be possible to blow the pieces in there out with an air gun while you try vacuuming them up ,it might dislodge them enough to let them get sucked up..

There are 2 holes,I believe, that go from just behind the VB and Aux VB into the tail shaft/governor cavity BUT I'm thinking you may be right about no high pressure because if there were that much pressure outside the VB the dipstick tube would be a fountain. Vac plus Airshot is exactly what I did. I think I'm just overthinking this and paranoid about another 700 nightmare:whistle:

Well it's a moot point now because I just HAD to get into it with the transfer case and trade some knuckle skin for some peace of mind. I found 2 big chunks of gov gear in the cavity so at least it wasn't all for nothing. Hopefully soon I'll be obsessing over something else and of course since it's me it'll be something oddball enough to be a riddle.
