I bought a 4.5 inch angle grinder from HF the other day. The manual warns NOT to grind with the edge of the disks. Any reason why? I see it done all the time.

cutting discs no, grinding discs (aka thicker ones) sure

the cutting ones are thin and very likely to break if sideways pressure is applied

So then an straight grinder and a thin cut off would also be a bad idea?

What should one use to cut metal then?

I'm confused. You cut with the thin blades, no mater what tool you are using. If you want to grind, you use the thicker ones. If you want to try and cut a curved line, slowly going though, they make slightly thicker discs that take a little longer to cut through (because of the width) but hold up to side-stress much better. If you want to cut concrete, use a diamond blade.

dont buy Harbor Freight discs..they dont last for crap and they break way easy.

Actually HF has a decent grinder. I just picked one up for work, its a drillmaster not a Chicago electric and I swear its an unbranded ryobi. My coworker has a a cheapo $30 Ryobi and this thing has the exact same case.

Obviously we're not talking quality but for $12 its nice to have a spare or not have to remember to bring my makita from home.

All I use are HF cut off wheels and flap discs. They last just as long as what you get at the box stores and half the price. I've only had the cut off wheels break when my grinder falls off the work surface and lands on the disc.

I've been using the $30 Ryobi grinders for a few years now. I typically buy a new one every year and a half due to bearings wearing out. YMMV, I use the **** out of them. I use the new one for main duty and bump the last one to wire wheel status. By that time, the wire wheel grinder is about done.

Shoot all I use is HF discs/flap wheels and grinders. They're so cheap I keep a couple on hand, one with a cut off wheel and one with a flap disc and when I smoke one I chuck it and pick up another.
I will admit our 4.5" grinders at work hold up better to leaning on them but it's not a big enough difference to warrant the price for a home garage. Plus I bet I could buy 8+ HF's for what a single good grinder will run you.

I have a Makita and DeWalt. The DeWalt has gone through hell and back, being used to cut concrete, you can hear it's pain. It still goes and goes. The Makita is for home and is a very good grinder. Dunno what I paid, just picked it up from HD.

I've used a Hilti grinder before, not long, but enough to know that thing is freaking crazy. It screams and doesn't slow down for anything. Holy crap!!!

The HF "zirconia" flapdiscs, the green ones, are okay and comparable to the Diablos or whatever I buy at the Despot. Course they cost about as much too.

The red ones from HF, ehh, I find they go dull in half a second.

But I've had good luck with their grinding and cutting wheels.
