Ok I pulled my transmission & transfer case out a couple of months ago to install a new clutch. I had my flywheel resurfaced and ordered a new clutch kit from South Bend Clutch with a diaphram(sp?) pressure plate. I installed a new clutch fork and put new bushings in the Z bar linkage, added the LONG clutch fork return spring (ordered both but couldn't make the little one work?), and also swapped out the large garage door style OEM spring for the new style pedal return spring.

Now I have a EXTREMELY annoying POP at the top of my clutch pedal travel. Clutch engages and disengages fine...and sometime the pop will go away for a few shifts...but usually comes back. Any idea what's causing this and how I cure it?

Ok drove the truck over to the garage I work in today and all the way over there the clutch did not pop while releasing. Got there and had a friend work the clutch pedal today while I crawled under the truck to investigate. Weird thing was when he started pressing down on the clutch it would pop going in, but not coming back out. Whatever is making the pop noise is happening inside the bellhousing though.

An old mechanic friend told me there are different length throw out bearings for our old trucks, and that most likely I got a short one in my clutch kit and need a long one? He's usually right on the money on his stuff, but I've never heard this before? Anybody have any insight?

i think i got it the other way... pretty sure my throwout bearing was too long, and "ran on" a lot for the first year or so... LOL i left it in, and my clutch must have worn down or the fingers wore out a little because it seems ok now...

Did you check the pivot point on the clutch pedal itself, and where the master cylinder"s pushrod attatches to the predal arm?

I know you said it was in the bellhousing... but mine creaks, and occasionally pops because the hole for the pin that connects the pushrod to the pedal is worn out. it is metal to metal... thought about drilling it out and bushing it, but not to motivated right now.

My 79 has a mechanical linkage so no master/slave cylinder. I did not replace the pivot ball inside the bellhousing, but it did not appear to be in bad shape.

This annoying pop comes and goes...I will deal with it until something fails or I install a NV4500.

I swapped a 4spd outta my '73 into my '75 K5 back in the day and had a similar issue. It wound up being the throwout bearing. Just lived with it 'til the tranny came out again for other reasons. Never hurt the performance a bit.

Was your throwout bearing to long or to short? I'm guessing probably to short?

I dont recall as it was years ago, but I believe we just didn't have it in exactly right.
