I picked up my '85 K20 6.2 Suburban about 5 months ago for a song with a blown 700r4. I knew the trans was bad when I bought it and I had originally planned on swapping in a th400 that I already had but when I dropped the glove box to check the build options, there they were, 4.10 gears. I've been back and forth on options trying to be cheap, but my wife told me to quit wasting time and get what I would be happy with! So I picked up a '92-'95 nv4500 two days ago. It had the mechanical bell housing but they had a hydraulic one as well so I chose it instead, being caught up in the deal I didn't think about the later one not working on the early trans.
Tomorrow I am pulling the drive train out of an '82 K30 diesel, sm465/np205 and I will be using the sm465 bell housing. Now before everyone jumps in and says you can't do that, I say yes you can. I also have a Bridgeport J2 mill that will be used to open up the bearing retainer opening on the 465 bell housing, then flip the transmission up on end and drill the new upper holes in the case. They will be sealed and studded, then I am making a bracket to hook up a hydraulic slave to the fork.
It would be much easier to just buy an AA bell housing but then whats the point of having a mill!?
This will probably take me a couple of weeks due to work, school, kid, and life so stay tuned.

On the early NV4500s the front bearing retainer is the same diameter as the SM465. All you need to do is redrill the 4500 for the 465 bell housing. :waytogo:

That's awesome! I pulled the K30 drive train today and when I put the bell housing up to the nv4500 the holes were a lot farther off than I thought. I was about to order an AA bell housing until I saw your picture.

Yea I had the same oh crap moment, if I had a mill or a mag drill I wouldn't even blink.. by hand sucked. Btw I drilled about .600 into the face and no penetration at any bolt hole. Fyi

how much did the 4500 go for?

right on! Local pick & pull? I'm in Havelock.

I should have taken pictures of the wiring! The pedals are in and the column is about done but here are a couple of connectors that I can't remember which way they go. One set is the brake light switch and cruise control/brake switch. The other is the flat white connector coming out of the column. I hope that the connector isn't shoved up on top of the pedals. I'll finish is up in the morning and then set the transmission up on the mill and get the bell housing adapted to it. Supposedly someone is coming to buy the '82 6.2l engine tomorrow so that will free up some floor space.

Take lots of pictures.

I have pedal/dash/column wiring pictures posted in my K5 and Suburban threads if you get truly lost.

I know this is an old thread, but I am about to do the 4500 swap using the 465 bellhousing. Can you give me any feedback on how it has been standing up? Also, can you tell me how deep you drilled the new bolt holes into the 4500 case? Thank you in advance.

I daily drove mine for a couple years with zero issues (before selling the truck). I even wound up removing and reinstalling the bell housing a few times. I drilled my holes through the flange and quite a bit further to ensure I wouldn't bottom out the bolts (it grazes the side of the case).

Check my M1009 thread for pictures:
