I picked up my '85 K20 6.2 Suburban about 5 months ago for a song with a blown 700r4. I knew the trans was bad when I bought it and I had originally planned on swapping in a th400 that I already had but when I dropped the glove box to check the build options, there they were, 4.10 gears. I've been back and forth on options trying to be cheap, but my wife told me to quit wasting time and get what I would be happy with! So I picked up a '92-'95 nv4500 two days ago. It had the mechanical bell housing but they had a hydraulic one as well so I chose it instead, being caught up in the deal I didn't think about the later one not working on the early trans.
Tomorrow I am pulling the drive train out of an '82 K30 diesel, sm465/np205 and I will be using the sm465 bell housing. Now before everyone jumps in and says you can't do that, I say yes you can. I also have a Bridgeport J2 mill that will be used to open up the bearing retainer opening on the 465 bell housing, then flip the transmission up on end and drill the new upper holes in the case. They will be sealed and studded, then I am making a bracket to hook up a hydraulic slave to the fork.
It would be much easier to just buy an AA bell housing but then whats the point of having a mill!?
This will probably take me a couple of weeks due to work, school, kid, and life so stay tuned.
