the more i think about it, a diesel sounds better than a 383 or 454.
ive never owned a diesel before.
what exactly is needed? and how much did it cost you to do the swap?

im going to get a new gas tank, because i can garrenty you i can't find a good burb tank here in michigan.
where could i get a flywheel? (going with the 465)
id like to find a 6.5 turbo, but may go with a 6.2 and add a turbo later.
i know i will need the hydro brake booster. is the powersteering pump enough for the hydro boost and hydro assist?

convince me to go diesel /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

16 + mpg with 4.56's and on 40's...plus it'll run upside down. Need more convincing? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I spent approx $1500 to do the swap and haven't regretted it for a moment. Best bet is to buy a 2WD running 6.2 donor truck and swap it all over to yours...then flog the carcass of the donor rig for whatever you can get. We found a running 83 C30 pick-up for $500...

do you wish you have a turbo? im thinking that a stock 6.2 won't be enough power for me /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

did a 465 ever come behind a 6.2 from the factory?

will the 400sb flywheel work with the 6.2?
i have a listing of flywheels in front of me and i see no 6.2 manual flywheel. the overall dimention of the SBC is 14.13 and the 6.2 is 14.125. this seems close enough for me. according to my book the 6.2 has a weight on it, so does the 400. the major difference is the tooth count. the 6.2 is 139t and the SBC is 168. the bolt pattern for the crank looks the same. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Here are some part numbers. Don't use a DMF flywheel (dual mass) They are not reliable. You might find one in a boneyard.

I doubt a SBC or BBC flywheel would work because of engine balance. I have never tried one, but it would be an interesting experiment. I called Center Force to see if I could use their clutch on the GM flywheel, assuming it was netural balance, and had the same bolt pattern. The answer from the tech rep was no but he could offer no explanation.

You can build 6.2 6.5 for max power or maybe economy. The combustion chambers come in various sizes and can be removed. They fit into the heads in a machined recess. The small chambers from the early 1980s produce great economy.

Flywheel - clutch numbers:
14061685 rollerized diesel pilot bearing
12556799 Flywheel GM, casting #14050525N 139 tooth (about $175.00)

15029428 Pressure Plate & Disk; 2-piece GM kit (about $189.74)
(consists of disk 15029430 and Pressure Plate 15029429)

15029429 Pressure Plate part number (included in kit) size: 11-7/8" OD
15029430 Friction Disk part number (included in kit) 10 spline 1.25" center

10085215 bolts flywheel, diesel

I really don't feel the need for a turbo. My 6.2 does just fine for me...feels quite similar to my 350 as far as drivabilty/power. A turbo would be fun...but it's pretty far down my list of things i want to do.

The 465 was available in the 3/4 and one tons. My donor motor was from an 85 K20 and was a factory 6.2/465 so I got the clutch and flywheel almost by accident. I really like the 465 behind the 6.2. The extra torque the 6.2 makes seems to mask the wide spacing between gears better than my 350 did.

It's pretty hard to beat off road too...in low range I'm pretty sure the clutch would smoke before it'd stall. A gas engine stalls so easily in comparison.

a frito lay/bread van cummins 4bt should be almost bolt in. cummins made the motors in th400 and sm465 configurations. it was designed and built to replace the 350's that were put in the late 70/early 80 p-30 chassis.
105hp/286tq if its turbo only. aftercooled is 120/300+.
you can get 250/500 reliably.

at 105/286 i get 24mpg at 70mph. im running 4.56 gears, nv4500, and 38.7" tires in a 6500lb vehicle that is literally flat across the front. i geared the fuel efficiency aroubd 55-60mph, NOT 70. it should get 30mpg if i kept it at 55-60. NOTE: 145 total miles =60 miles highway (65 to 70mph)/85 miles stop and go town driving
24.16 mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i want to keep it all GM. i talked to the local parts store and most GM and ford diesel parts they keep on hand, alot of the other diesels they don't and could take up to 5 days to get the parts. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

now just to hunt for a 6.2l truck with a trashed body. /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

look for a 3/4 ton or one ton...they all got the 'J' code 6.2's which make a bit more power. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Rene

is the "J" the engine vin letter? ill look for those, i found a few 1/2 ton for $500 or so but they are several hundred miles away, and can't afford to go far to get one /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Yes the 'J' refers to the VIN. The 'J' code has no EGR crap on it...and if you're lucky you'll find an SM465 bolted up to it already. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rene

i think i found a truck
83 or 84 k30 6.2l 465/205 14bff/d60 srw all for $400 body is trash
/forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
buy some of my crap please /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Sell a kidney and grab that thing before someone else does. The diff's are worth double the ask price or more all by themselves!!

Rene

How bout this, I pay for it, keep the axles, and you can have the rest /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Serriously though, snatch that up FAST. Beg, borrow, sell blood, sell sperm, man whore for a few nights, whatever it takes.

Don't run across those in MI very ofter for that price. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

no, no you dont. i just paid $800 for my DRW K30, with no motor at all.

TJ, mind if i ask where that 1/2 ton truck is? if its a couple hundred miles from you, it could be local to me. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

they were on ebay, one was in columbus ohio the other was in boston.

this guy with the k30 is in no hurry to get rid of it, he owns a towing company and it sits in his lot. maybe i can talk him down even more /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Don't be greedy...someone will snipe it from under you. Beg, Borrow or steal and go get that thing!!
