Did a search of the forums here and couldn't find anything so here goes...

I am thinking of going to a pick-your-part type salvage yard. While I was researching differentials I found out the way to tell the 8.5" (rear) from the 8.6" is that all 8.5's are drum and 8.6's are disc (according to MY4BY.com.) Since the 8.6" can be installed in the 6.5" carrier with the right bearings/races, would the disc brakes swap over as well? Just got my curiosity going.

Anyone tried this or know if it would be a bolt on swap?

Thanks for all responses!

the backing plate mounting flange and clocking and depth is prob way to different .

if you want 10 bolt rear and disc brakes just swap the whole axle .

Didn't want to mess with relocating spring mounts and shock mounts plus medical limitations would make it almost impossible to get something that big.

Been there, done that, in my younger days, but now would rather not have the hassle.

Either way I'll take a tape and see if I can find a year with the same dimensions.(Maybe I can bribe an employee to help me get one if it'll match up) :dunno:.

Thanks.

there is no disc brake rear to bolt in our trucks i have ever read up on other than full custom spec built or use late model axle and change some stuff your self .

after the end of 91 blazer/suburban/crew cab the 88-up body style went wider frame rails in the rear = wider spring perches for the leafs in the rear .

also went metric 14mm studs for the wheels . can be swapped to 1/2" then upgrade the front to 1/2" over the 7/16" size .

its do able but as you said you have limits to respect so this might be a mod to skip or farm out to someone who has done this mod before .

Yes, I'm in a wheelchair and just getting across the gravel is tough. I can barely get to the trucks with just a few tools in my backpack but I figured I could put a carrier on my lap and make it back to my van. Been this way for over 21 years but I still try to do stuff I shouldn't even try. Just can't get my brain to stop wanting to do stuff my body won't do. In my mind I'm still young but reality hits home quick.

I built some tough trucks in my day but night has fallen!

I'll bet I can get a pumpkin though! :D
