I know the tire/gear combo question has been asked a thousand times before, but I am trying to get some feedback on actual experience/setups - is anyone running this setup, or somehting similar?
Motor: 383 TBI (285 HP/400 ft-lbs)
Trans: SM 465 4 Spd Manual
Axle Ratio: 3.73 (9.5" 14 bolt SF)
Tires: 35X12.50-15
My rig ('91 Blazer) originally came with 10 bolts, 3.08 gears on 235 metric tires, yuck! I'm currently running the stock TBI motor with some mild mods, 33" BFGs with 3.73 gears in a 12 bolt: it is geared about right I think but on the low side. Now I would like to make the jump to 35's. I just procured a 14 bolt SF with 3.73's in it and I recently spent alot of time and money regearing my front axle to 3.73's so would like to stick with that ratio if possible. On paper this brings it back to about stock gearing. Seems like the new 383 (in a box in my garage) would make up for the tire size increase and added weight of the axle without having to regear again, given the dog of a 350 it has now. I guess I'll find out, but would like to have an idea of what to expect ahead of time. If I knew I had to regear again, then I think the 33's will stay on for awhile. Any experience/input is appreciated. Also, this a general purpose rig - trails, rocks, and pavement.
