How do i know if it is my valve guides or my rings? Just your usual sbc 350 in my 79 jimmy. It smokes sometimes and the plugs get oil build up on em. I found a set of heads i want to get, but i need a good execuse to tell the misses why im spending more money on my truck. So im hoping its just the valve guides and not the rings. Any help is apprecitiated guys. ;)

There are ways to do leak down tests on cylinders. Using compressed air. Some place the air will leak out of the cylinder. Valves or pistion rings.

I don't have too many specifics for you but somebody on here knows exactly how to do it.

I believe you'd have to back the rockers all the way off to ensure the valves are closed completely.

An adapter to put the compressed air in the spark plug hole would be required. Could possible be fabbed out of an old spark plug.

I would imagine if the exhaust valve leaks you'll hear it in the exhaust. Intake well then..... so on and so on.

^^^^^ Some more on what he said^^ here is a link, not my page just a reference! http://www.xs11.com/tips/misc/misc3.shtml I have used this test for years one of the best ways to diagnose engine issues. You can buy one at any good auto part store they will have 2 gauges on the store model 1 for the compressed air coming in and the other one for pressure in the cylinder.

Does the truck only smoke when its first started? does it go away or smoking all the time and what color is it black or blue??

It smokes mostly when started. Then sometimes when i get on it. And its a grey cloud. Not black or blue. And it doesnt look like coolant burning.

Under power, it is most likely the rings. When you let off, most likely valve guides. Doing a compression test will tell you a lot. From my experience, most trucks this vintage have bad of both....
