I have a 383 and am running headers and 2.25" dual exhaust exiting through the rear bumper.

I was running a cheap set of cherry bomb turbo mufflers but now i am going to change out the mufflers and tailpipes to stainless steel. It has to be quiet. Im on the neighbors s*** list now, and honestly its kinda obnoxious at 5:00am.

Does anyone run Magnaflow XL 3 chamber or Dynomax welded mufflers? Any suggestions? i hate to weld this all up just to take it apart and buy another set of mufflers.

One option is Walker. Apparently they make a ton of OEM stuff, which is typically not loud. I can't comment on how well they actually perform, but for quiet, I doubt they can be beat.

I was looking at Borla, as according to the testing I've seen, they produce the quietest mufflers out there, but I think that still leans towards the performance side, so there is probably more noise from a Borla than if performance wasn't the key consideration, which appears to be the case with walker.

Play around on Walkers site and you'll find various mufflers in the SS line. I found one that was a dual inlet/single outlet, which would be perfect for headers. I believe that was off a 90's GM truck.

summitracing.com makes it a bit easier to search, since they carry walker too. http://www.summitracing.com/search/...ameter-in/2-250-in/?keyword=walker+quiet-flow But I don't see a way to select SS there, which is what you are asking for. Walker makes them, just doesn't appear summit lists them.

I'm going for the quietest setup I can run, while being stainless. Still haven't made up my mind, but I'm leaning towards the Walker. The stock 6.2L exhaust on my truck now is actually pretty quiet and doesn't drone, but it's rotten.

Want it quiet put a high flow cat on it.

Or 2 mufflers ( the cats are much smaller so easier to fit)

The thought had crossed my mind. Haven't seen any sound comparisons of cat vs no cat though. :)

It pretty much acts like another muffler just way easier to mount.

I once knew a guy who drove a plain jane 4 dr malibu mid 70s era. stock looking tires on it, steel wheels, didn't even have much chrome, stock bench seat, stock shifter, outwardly it appeared to be a stock malibu.

Dude ran a BUILT big block, I don't remember what the car would run but with proper tires it was fast. Even with his crap tires it was fast. It defined sleeper.

He ran 2 mufflers and a catalytic converter from a Viper on it, he said the cat is what helped it the most. You could barely hear the car at idle

I forgot to mention i have 2 high flow Catco cats installed, from my collectors to the mufflers is already done in 409 stainless. I knew i would be changing where the tailpipes were exiting that was why i went with the cheap turbo mufflers.

I figured with the cats ( never ran them before  ) it wouldnt be quite as loud, i was wrong. Im not overly worried about flow rates, its all about low end torque with this build. Its more of a quiet quality sound im hoping for, or maybe im getting old?

first off :thumb: on keeping the fellow neighbors happy . wish more did this .

and borla is not quiet by any means . boss has full borla on his 6.2 denali and its vary noticable.

if looking at flow master 50 or 70 series and delta flow will be best option for them.

otherwise stock style o.e. mufflers will be best.

i have run the flowmaster 50 series suv they are fairly quiet till you get into the go peddle,
i also have the 50 series suv on a 383 in a monte carlo running 2 cats and its real quiet

I have been a fan of the Walker Super Hemi Turbo for a couple of decades now. These are one of the best flowing performance mufflers out there and are very quiet by performance muffler standards. I am installing a set on my Suburban this week, I have been running a single 3 inch in/out version but the tailpipe is getting rust through so I am stepping up to duals. I have also used the Flowmaster 50 series SUV muffler, It is much quieter than other flowmasters but not as quiet as the Walker and doesn't flow as well, but it is very well constructed and would be more durable in a salt/snow environment IMO

It was the Borla XS (not other Borla models) that came out as being the quietest of the "performance" mufflers.

Here's what I had seen, which I haven't seen updated, and this has been around for awhile:

1.Borla XS, 80db at idle, 90db at 2,000 rpm, 110db at WOT.
2.Hooker Maxflow, 80db at idle, 90db at 2,000 rpm, 120db at WOT.
3.Magnaflow, 82db at idle, 91 at 2,000 rpm, 114db at WOT.
4.Flowmaster, 82db at idle, 93 at 2,000 rpm, 115db at WOT.
5.Flowtech Warlock, 83db at idle, 92 at 2,000 rpm, 112db at WOT.
6.Dynomax UltraFlo, 83db at idle, 94 at 2,000 rpm, 113db at WOT.
7.Borla XR1, 83db at idle, 96db at 2,000 rpm, 118db at WOT.
8.Bassani Street, 83db at idle, 96db at 2,000 rpm, 120db at WOT.
9.Edelbrock RPM, 84db at idle, 93db at 2,000 rpm, 118db at WOT.
10.Bassani Real Street, 84db at idle, 96db at 2,000 rpm, MAX. (120+db).
11.Flowtech Afterburner, 86db at idle, 94db at 2,000 rpm, 115db at WOT.
12.Flowtech Terminator, 86db at idle, 94db at 2,000 rpm, 119db at WOT.
13.Hooker Aerochamber, 87db at idle, 94db at 2,000 rpm, 114db at WOT.
14.SpinTech, 87db at idle, 97db at 2,000 rpm, 116db at WOT.
15.MAC, 87db at idle, 98db at 2,000 rpm, 119db at WOT.
16.No Muffler, 91db at idle, 103db at 2,000 rpm, MAX. (120+db).

I wonder what the OEM's are going for on modern truck exhaust. It seems many people want a bit of a deep tone, I'm not sure if the modern OEM exhaust therefore is a bit noisier than what was spec'd when our trucks were made...

Are you talking about the Dynomax?

I've had cats on and off with a couple of different systems. Always noticeably quieter with the cats - like half as loud. Most aftermarket branded mufflers are designed to be louder than stock. That's where the perceived performance gains come from. If you want quiet, go with OEM replacement stuff. All else being equal - bigger, longer mufflers are quieter.

On the other hand, I have feared anger from the neighbors with louder systems. Then I just hear them say "hey, sounds pretty good...". The "holy grail" is a system that sounds like the wrath of God when you open it up but seems OEM quiet when you're easy on it. I don't know if it's actually achievable, but as long as it CAN be quiet, you can sneak down the street when you want to.

Cat worked for me. I kept failing emissions and getting obnoxious smells so I put a new cat on before the Flowmaster 40, which was on it when I bought it. When I got home after getting the cat my wife was surprised - she said that she didn't even hear me pull up to the house.

I'm running dual 50 series suv w/o cats. There a little louder at idle than I wanted, but they do sound great when you mash the peddle.:waytogo:

High flow cats will make it louder than standard bodied cats. They do tend to make it quieter but not 50%. Flowmaster's 70 series are quieter, but are also expensive and are huge. Borla's are essentially the same as a magnaflow but cost a lot more. Check into flo-pro brand, they have a great selection of different mufflers for different needs.

I used to have the Flow Master 50 and it was MUCH louder. I then tried the 70 series and it was still too loud.

I now have a Walker OEM muffler on my 1991 and you basically cannot hear anything at an idle, and there is a low rumble under power but it's very, very quiet. I think it is nice, but I'm 40-something years old now ... :)

My truck is parked right next to my neighbors bedroom window and they have never complained.
