Looking for some guidance to troubleshoot slow wipers on my '85 Blazer. The column mounted wiper controls were broken when I bought the Blazer. The mist tab would rotate in place so I bought a new one and wired it in. No change. Replaced the wiper motor. No change - yep lack of troubleshooting on my part. I do not have delay.
Pretty sure I have a ground problem, but I can't figure out where. From everything I've read and researched the wiper speeds are ground switched. I took some voltage readings this evening:
Low Speed
2 wire connector:
Grey Wire: 0-2V seems to switch with the cam
Black Wire: Fluctuates but around 2V
3 wire connector:
White - 11.2V
Grey - 2V give or take a volt as the wipers swing
Purple - 5V give or take a volt as the wipers swing
High Speed
2 wire connector:
Grey Wire: 3-5V
Black: 4.5V
3 wire connector:
White - 11V
Grey - 1-4V give or take a volt as the wipers swing
Purple - 2V give or take a volt as the wipers swing
I took some pictures but looks like I need to upload them somewhere else first then put the URL here. I thought I could upload directly.
When I find other posts with issues with slow wipers the advice is 'check your grounds'. k... where? I'm certain that's the problem I have but I don't know where to look. What is the physical location of these grounds I need to find and clean?
There's some ground tabs behind the instrument panel on the left side attached to the body. There were two ground leads there, but I don't recall what they went to. There were 4 other unused tabs and I used an available tab to ground new gauges which work fine and light up well. I've cleaned the body grounds above the headlights. New engine to frame ground strap. Frame to body strap cleaned.
Surely the ground I'm looking for is around the instrument panel, but where? What I think is the wiper connector at the bottom of the steering column has seven wires that disappear up in to the column. No idea where they go after that. The new wiper switch on the column connects on the right side of the steering column and there are three wires that come off of that and go to a main harness that's all taped up. I'm refraining from cutting the tape on all the harnessing around the steering column but I might have to in order to find out where they go.
I'm determined to fix this, just need some help knowing where to look. Thank you!
