ok, right now I've got an sm 465 with an np205, it's the 10 spline version. and I'm looking into ditching that tranny and swapping in my turbo 400 that I've got in the garage... Its attacted to a 32 spline np203. can I just use the 203 adapter or is it totally different? also can I just swap out the input shaft on the t-case or? I've been doing some searching, and even called a couple places and can't really get a 100% answer.

Thanks guys!!

Why downgrade to an auto trans? Especially if its an original 4 speed!

Its all about finess! I love the 3 footed dance...

All a matter of opinion. I have loved my 4 speed ever since I got the truck and don't have plans to swap it out any time soon. All of my wheeling is in the rocks.

There is no doubt in my mind that an auto is superior in the rocks. You have more control with an auto and not having to push the clutch in to stop really helps you keep your line.

Wheel what you have, what you like, etc. Who really cares, as long as you're having fun :p:

Except that if you have a manual which has a lower first gear you don't need to change gears just keep it going, and even better with a diesel that way no need to even touch the gas pedal. :D just idle all over.

looks like I'm going to have to either get a stak type t-case or a d300 just to make things easier plus I can get the lomax 4 to 1 for it later on down the road

Let me put it this way:

I have always loved my 465. The super low first gear is excellent, along with reliability etc. I prefer driving a stick. I severely question the reliability of any auto.

Here's what I'm getting at:

Once you get into the really tough stuff in the rocks, that auto has the advantage. Being able to have one foot on the brake and one on the gas gives you tons of control. Much more than a manual.

Trust me, I've three pedaled my 4 speed for many years. You will never be able to hold lines like an auto. You will never have the smoothness that an auto has.

Realize that I am talking about 9-10 rated type trail stuff here, on the easier stuff I can just idle over whatever. The manual rules on everything but the hardest stuff, IMO.

Oh yeah, hijack off :haha:

Oh well, I never really cared for those types of rock crawling, I just wheel to get to places.
The worst I did was 4' boulders, and I didn't need to touch any pedals. :wink1:

Why not just keep the 203?
They really aren't that bad if your not daily driving them.

Also, isn't the 32 spline 203 the one you want to make a doubler?
You already got a np205.

EDIT: I looked it up, you need the 32 spline 205.
But still, you are close to a doubler.
Plus, a doubler is a heavy pig anyway, which is one thing people say is a big drawback to the np203.

the 205 I have is from an 1987 one ton with an sm465.. I THINK that means it's a 32 spline?? does that mean that all I'd need is the 400/205 adapter and a new output shaft for my 400??

Correct.
Your output is the short shaft only for 203.
You need a 4wd 205 shaft and the adapter and you are set.

OR couldn't I just get a full 400 that was originally bolted to a 205? is the 400 version of the 205 the same as the 465 version of the 205? and is there a way without pulling it apart to be sure that I do infact have the 32 spline input on my 205? like a chart or something that tells you what years had what?

You could get the th400 complete, probably cost you less.
It's the same for a 208 or 205, they are a dime a dozen, the one you have is less available, not rare but not as available as the 208/205 version.
The shaft should be sticking 3" out of the back of the case.
the 2wd sticks 4.5" and the 203 sticks out 1.5" or 2", but you know that one you have it :D
Those are the 3 different lengths in the chevy line up.
There are more in the Cadillac trannies but lets not go there.
If your 205 came from an 87, and if the bolt pattern is 6 bolts round, then you have a 32 spline long input.
If the boltpattern on the 205 is a figure 8, then it's an old 10 spline.
You don't need a chart when you can recognize from the outside. :D
