It's time to finally replace the forty-year-old steering box on my Jimmy.
4 inch Skyjacker springs, d60, ca50 pitman arm ,ord steering brace, fush kit, ord extended shackles, and 1.5 inch tierod . Box and hoses seeping doesnt wander but when driving it feels like to much assist. Have $1000 budget, go.

I'm still on the fence about going to cross over I've heard just as many negative things about that as positive things. The truck is not a Wheeler at all it's a dirt bike hauling and going off the beaten path camping vehicle.

No offense but if you're not interested in crossover then why the $1k budget? Buy one or both of the steering braces and put a good reman stock box on it.

Sorry to intrude on the thread, but does anyone make a decent new box thats not a fortune? I ordered a reman ac delco from rock auto and it still has a noticeable amount of slack in it.

My ac delco has the same issue. I got it a few months back. I should have just left the old box on it. Everything else is good and tight and the new steering box has way to much play in it. Is there a way to take that out. I think there should be room for more adjustment wouldn't you guys think. Sorry as well to intrude on the thread. Thanks

I think that would be the best route for you to go. Mine is just a hunting and camping rig and so far I have no complaints with the stock steering, except for the ac delco steering box as mentioned above. I do plan on installing the ORD bolt on steering brace and I want the sway bar disconnect.

I guess that's why I posted on here will crossover steering be good for a highway truck? And like the other said most of the remanufactured steering boxes are no good anyway.

And I don't feel it's a waste of money I want to have a nice reliable dependable vehicle.

For a street only truck, crossover is probably not worth the cost. Also, crossover has interference issues on stock height trucks (if you're not lifted).

The PSC stuff is high quality but I think all of their boxes come tapped for hydraulic assist so I'm sure some of the cost would be wasted on an "option" you may never use. Maybe check in to rebuilding your box?

I stand corrected, I see PSC has non assist boxes available under $400 but they are still "reconditioned", I didn't see the warranty but I didn't look too much either. Maybe search @Mastiff 's posts, iirc he was hunting for a high quality replacement box a while back.

Im running a total of 5 inches of lift. My main issue is that the steering has no feel. Like the steering wheel isn't even attached to anything. What better feel. Did some searching on the site be fore i posted , really couldn't find an answer to my question which is what's just the best performing ,for a driver crossover are push and pull.

Yeah I figured $369 for a regular box or $350 for a crossover steering box wasn't that bad.

After driving a K5 that I did a PSC , crossover install on, I wouldn't buy it for any of mine.
I have 2 trucks with boxes built by Benchworks in Phoenix, and one done by Raven in Denver.
The last one that I got from Benchworks was $280, IIRC.
The one that I did with PSC stuff, had an assist ram. Didn't like the end results, but I didn't buy it.
The '72 K5 has a ram as well, Raven built box, much better.

I'd say if you do the usual stuff like new box and take the slack out, and the rest of your steering and front end parts are in good shape that's about as good as it's going to get without crossover. Which is mainly for pushing big meat around off road. Hydro assist and all that is overkill for what you say you're going to be doing.

It's a leaf spring solid axle lifted truck with 50 year old technology. Only so much you can do. It's never going to feel like a sports car.

I bought a reman from RA and it was nice and tight, wasn't a AC Delco though.

With my ac delco box should I just keep exchanging them until I get a tight one or go with another company. I bought it local so they should be able to transfer a few in to test out. Or should I adjust the screw on the top to take out most of the play?
