I used nylon straps for the first time today, have always used chains before. I hooked the straps in the pockets and I won't be doing that again. Anyway you hook them to the pockets it just doesn't work properly, kinks the strap or just doesn't get a good grip on the pocket.
I'm going to weld loops next to the pockets so the hooks on the straps can pivot for proper alignment.

I used to, but after a few trips the straps were showing some wear. Welded on some Huge D-rings, much better, and they are fairly inexpensive. I think I paid 10 bucks a piece for 3/4" dia D-rings.

D-rings or massive eyehooks. If I have to use the stakepockets for tying down misc. loads, I use axle straps through the stake pockets, then hook the straps to that.
