who uses anti-spatter spray when MIG welding?


I've occasionally used nozzle dip to keep that a bit cleaner, but often just go the pen knife route...

but i never used spray can stuff for the whole surface area I'm welding... it would make me nervous at the point of the weld being such a surface prep freak that i am that it would affect the weld...

I saw this video and it got me wondering if I should be using something... save me on after cleanup... bad language for the kiddies... let me know if the vid doesn't work..

but he didn't do the murphy soap like the FB vid....

I used to use the dip all the time on the nozzle back in the day.. than I had some contamination issues and stopped, thinking it was that... I started using it again recently without issue cuz I get tired of scraping the nozzle out periodically...

but I've NEVER used anything on the work surface.. i know that different things affect the amount of spatter, welder settings, technique, fluxcore, etc... obviously I'm not really worried about "cleaning" the surfaces after being a prep nut.. I just hate the spatter I get in corners sometimes that's stooopid hard to remove without getting all crazy with carbide burrs and such...
 
I have a tub of weldmark brand nozzle dip . Had it for 5+years now . Works good no real smell .

Trick is get it HOT welding first . Then dip the nozzle tip of the gun in. Then shake out the extra . Then do a scrap chunk of metal weld to burn off the extra . Then go for it and weld away .

I am maybe on my 2nd diffuser and under 1 dozen tips in 5+plus years on both my migs . And some of you guys know i like to weld and i dont post up half of what i weld .

As to splatter its just casualty of the job in my opinion. I clean up after and it is what it is . But i tend to not have a lot as i have the wire speed dialed in real good to the point of mig but can almost look like a dirty tig weld .

yeah, i'm fine with using nozzle gel.. i use Marquette...

I think the main reason I've been getting more spatter lately is being lazy and running the machine on autoset... I've always felt the wire speed was a bit fast in that mode... gonna have to start doing quickie test coupons prior and manually setting the machine up. it's not horrible, just seems a bit more than i used to get...
 
I know Kert uses it...a quick mist on the part. Too much contaminates the weld, and his welds suffer nothing.
Give him a shout for recommendation.
 
Blue Demon Anti-Spatter

It's water based so no terrible chemicals to breathe in when using in a tight spots. I spray it on my nozzle too. I have only used it on stainless using stainless steal flux core wire since it spatters much more than regular wire. Just make sure you don't leave it in a frozen garage being that it's water based.
