Hey guys. I'm gathering up parts for my truck. I got a 14bolt FF and I'm going to convert my D44 to 8 lug. I've heard that there are no difference between the two, and I heard that you have to use 3/4 ton spindles if you make the swap. I'd really like to be able to reuse my current spindles, so I thought I'd see what you all have to say. Thanks for the info.

there are 2 different size spindles.im not sure what year they changed.my original 72 spindles didnt work with the new 3/4 ton hub.i think it was off of a 82.if you get the whole outer hub assymbly, make sure the spindle comes with it.

early 77 was a between time , could of had either depending on when they were produced that year .

But generally its 77 and older is small , and 77 and newer is large . The rear bearing inner diameter that is , the outer bearing and spindle nuts are the same size IIRC .

So if I have a large bearing spindle, I just need a large bearing hub assembly right? I'm just trying to get by as cheap as possible on this.

I think the outer size of the bearing remained the same , just the inner size changed . Larger number of smaller rollers with the larger inner diameter bearing , while keeping the same outer size .

someone needs to chime in , but thats what i remember .

yep the outer bearing (hub side) was the same but the inner bearing was different.im pretty sure i had the bigger spindle for my conversion.my 72 spindle was too small.so i used the one that was supplied with my conversion.if you are getting it from a junkyard you should be able to get the whole assymbly for just a few bucks more when you add in the spindle.if yours is talready the bigger one it should be fine.i seem to recall the bearing change being in 77 also now that i think about it.

I just checked into this the other day for someone. The year split was mid 1976, the outer bearings are all the same but the inner bearing is what changed and the early bearing had a 1.75" ID diameter while the later had a 2" ID diameter and the hub is different because the whole bearing is larger.
