So i was thinking about diesel Vs. gas engines, over thinking as i often do :haha:i'm trying to figure out what is really the best engine design. We all know the pros and cons of each but i was wondering how much of that is due to the way they are made. for example a diesel is much higher compression and usually much longer stroke ext. So if we put aside the reasons why we can lets say we had 2 engines that were exactly the same, compression, bore, stroke the whole 9 but one was gas and one was diesel would they both be the same? would the diesel still have more power. or maybe the gas  so what do you guys think? any experts around that really know the intimates of the designs and stuff. lets see where this goes thanks guys

Well if they were the exact same compression either the gas one would blow up due to too high of compression or the diesel engine would not run due to not enough compression.

to elaborate....the reason the diesel is such high compression is so the diesel will ignite. Gas would detonate well before getting to 19:1 compression. Thus it is almost impossible to have the exact same engine run gas and or diesel. Propane would be a different story.

i know that thats why i said we would have to ignore a few things.

does any body know, what do you guys think or is that the main reason that one is different than the other.

Ok if everything was the same the deisel would win it is a much stronger design thats why semi's can go 1 to 2 million miles somthing even the best gas engine cant lay claim to.

So if you put all reasoning aside and had the exact same engine that would run either on gas or diesel which would be better?

Is that really the question????:doah:

If everything was the same and both engines would run on gas or diesel and both of the fuels had the same flash point......

THEY WOULD BE FREAKING EQUAL.....ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL THAT IS

If everything is equal neither would be stronger....no?

they would each use their respective fuels, really what im trying to figure out is, if the design was equal would one still be supierior. for example everyone knows a diesel has like twice as much torque but is that because its a diesel or because it is twice the compression and has twice the stroke.

i guess your right though i suppose thats what makes them different
