Does anybody know of a good way to get the thermostat housing off on a 99 Monte Carlo w/ the 3.1L so I can replace the T-stat. I cannot get to the bolts for the life of me.:angry1:

It is getting very frustrating as I have never had so much trouble replacing a T-stat:angry1::angry1::angry1::1zhelp:

Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated:bow::bow::bow:
Thanks

They're definitely not easy to do. The best way I've found is remove the throttle body, that gives just enough room to kinda sorta work in.

Or re3move the exhaust crossover pipe, But It can be done without removing anything, but it is a major PIA

i think alldata says to remove the x-over. it makes it alot easier. just spray the studs on the exhaust with pb or something cause if you snap one of them, they suck to replace.

Ok Guys

Thanks for all the replies, I finally got to them:laugh: and then the bolt rounded out, but I still managed to get the SOB out:wink1:. Thanks again:bow:

Also now though does anybody have any tricks on getting the air purged out of this system, it seems never ending. I'm starting to hate this car.:doah:

there should be two brass bleeders, one on the thermostat housing and one on the hard (metal) water line that comes out of the water pump houseing (see pic). open both of them at the same time and let it run for alittle. it may need to warm up alittle, but not all the time. one will bleed out before the other. close the one and let the other open till it bleeds. if you cant get any at all, try revving it alittle, or even hold it alittle above idle for a minute. just watch the temp gauge. then turn the heat on to make sure its circulating. if its warm, your done :D

Is it possible to do with just the one breather valve on the T-stat housing, :confused:because the other one on the water pump housing is broke off:(

i doubt it. i suppose if your extremely lucky, but ive always had to use both bleeders. where is it broke off at? can you unscrew the whole valve itself? the brass part is threaded into the t-stat housing. if there is enough left there to get a wrench on, just unscrew the whole valve itself and bleed it that way. if theres nothing left to get ahold of, i dono what to tell ya.. :(

Yeah, I could still unscrew the whole valve, its the little 7MM nut on top of it thats broke off

Do I pull that whole valve out to do it

its probably not the best way, but if the tops broke off, its better than nothing. just try loosening it first, with out taking it out the whole way. if nothing comes out, then just take it out the whole way, just be ready to screw it back in when it comes. it most likely will be hot too, speaking from expirience :D it hurts

I'll probably have to pull it out, I tried to open it just a little and nothing came out:mad:. I'll be back in a minute, and try not to burn myself:o

Alright thanks so much for the help:bow:, finally got it bled.

By chance you wouldn't happen to know what would cause the temperature to keep fluctuating around everywhere:confused:, I've already replaced the water pump, flushed the system myself and now just did the Thermostat and it still :waytogo:continues to fluctuate, I don't get it:1zhelp:

I also have to ask since I am stumped, though I don't think this would be causing it, but could having the heater core bypassed cause these fluctuations

it depends on how you have it bypassed. if there is a bend or u-shape in the piece of hose that you used to bypass it with, it could have trapped an air pocket in there. but if you have it straight, it shouldnt effect it at all. sometimes they are just a pita :wink1:

Hmmm....

Yeah, it is bypassed in a U...oops:doah:

Also I did find a small pinhole in the little 4" bypass hose from the throttle body to the crossover,:crazy:so I am in the process of replacing that:hack:

I will post up what happens after the replacement, its raining out now, so I will wait until it stops

Well I replaced the hose and no go:mad:, I am starting to think that it is a blown head gasket between the head and a water jacket,:eek1: because the fluid is not mixing w/ oil and vice versa, but the system continues to get air again after its bled and it pressurizes pretty quick, this sucks because the car still runs perfectly smooth.

Is it worth it to fix it or try to sell it, but how much could I really get for a car with a blown head gasket.:dunno:

Thanks for all the help also, I really appreciate it

Just an update

Ok I just got the intake manifold off, and it was cracked in about 4 different places,:eek1: so I am assuming this is it and I do not need to pull the heads,:o I'll find out.

As soon as I pulled the Power Steering, you could see all kinds of gunk and stuff where it was coming out the intake manifold:doah:, and there are small droplets of water in the valley:eek1:
