I dug around for info on what kinds of late model gm SUVs would be best for my wife but most of the advice is about what to look for in a wheeler.

I'd like some advice on what years/models would be best for my wife as a kid hauler with 4 doors at under $4000. Maybe an s10 or a tahoe? I've got all the tools to repair GM stuff but wouldn't mind a Cherokee or an Explorer either.

Ummm.... About the only thing the late model GM SUVs are good for is freeway wheeling /crusing, Hardcore wheeling at the mall is where they excell.
Cherokees are nice but kinda small. Dont get much better MPG than Tahoes.IMO Stay away from used Exploders.
For a kid hauler 4x4. I would look for a well taken care of Tahoe. should be able to pick up a nice low milage one for around 4K if you shop around. Dont buy the first one you see. There are lots and lots of them on the market.

If you want a smaller SUV like Cherokee or Explorer size. A Toyota 4 runner is the best of the bunch. IMO.

x2 on the 4runner, easy to park, fits kids in the back, wheels decent in stock shape, about 20 or so mpgs every tank, lasts forever...

Yea, I like the 4Runner better but the price on those seems to be a bit higher than I'd like. Maybe I'll just have to look harder.

Edit: Just checked craigslist and theres a ton of 'em now. Weird.

My chevys are all toys. I DD a 98 Cherokee 2dr and we just picked up a 01 Grand Cherokee Laredo for Julie to haul the kids in.

I like my Jeeps, but only the ones with the 4.0L I-6. My Cherokee on 31's gets ~20mpg interstate. Julie's Grand gets ~19, but it's a fair amount heavier than my XJ.

I'm not impressed with the later model GM stuff. Mom and Dad have two S-10 Blazers. One 2dr and one 4dr. I think they are hard to see out of. I've never driven a TrailBlazer, but they lose me on their looks. Tahoe's look nice, never driven one of them either, but I'd own them before any other current SUV offering from GM.

I have my eye on a 95 4Runner in great shape for $3k, but the guy says it may be sold today. Still waiting to hear back. The Tahoe seems ok too and there's a few around in my price range. I just need something that gets about 20 mpg or better with 4 doors and room for groceries and the miscellaneous junk that seems to follow the kids around.

I vote tahoe, but you won't see 20mpg. Maybe 16-17 flat freeway downhill with a tailwind......but probably 13-14 combined.

Wife has a 2007 2wd subarban it's been a real good vehicle. Milage is 18 highway 12 in town. I would have chosen a tahoe but she says its not big enough, wtf.

Yep, but the 07 is a 5.3L with cylinder deactivation. Different situation.

For his price range, he'll be looking at the 90's generation, with the 5.7L vortec (or tbi if 95).

I had a 94 blazer (2 door tahoe) with the 5.7L TBI motor, and never saw more than 17mpg on the freeway, cruise set, flat ground.

The tahoe is heavier than that blazer, but teh vortec was slightly more efficient, so that point is a wash.

yup wifes 07 sub omly gets 12 in town on good days, just galde she doesn't drive far.
