Transmission just started making this (horrible) sound today. Both vids with hubs unlocked, TC in 2H

Transmission In drive

Transmission In park

Sounds like something is rubbing. All clear around the flywheel / converter?

Checked the dipstick and there's metal shavings so there might be multiple failures.

What's y'alls opinion on simply replacing the 35 yr old 700r4, torque converter, flex plate, radiator and cooling lines? Would that be over kill? What would y'all replace the 700r4 with? Radiator was replaced in the last 2 yrs or so, would y'all just flush it instead of replacing it? I want to keep everything as stock as possible including the NP241C. Just mall crawling for now but I fantasize about having enough time to get into 4 wheeling. It's riding on 33's and a 2" lift kit will be installed in the near future in case that influences the transmission replacement.

Just get it rebuilt, new converter and flex plate. You can flush out lines and radiator. 89 so you have a good version of k case late model 700r4.

I agree with this. If you have metal in the oil, it needs to be gone through, even if the only failure (so far!) is the torque converter. They make kits to do the flush or you can get creative. It's possible there's nothing wrong with the flexplate, so you can wait to look when the transmission comes out or replace it regardless for MAW. Does it drip oil? That would be a good time to do the rear main seal.

What gears are in the axles? Matching them to tire size goes a long way for making the transmission last. Being that you're in a hot climate, you might add a 2nd cooler after the radiator cooler.

Shavings could be a lot of things, but most likely torque converter or front pump.
Regardless once that is in there the whole thing needs gone through.

If you have access to a good trans shop, I agree, rebuild what you have, but upgrade a bit. Your trans guys should know what to do, that's a very common trans, parts are available, people know how to work on them, plus it's what came in your truck. Stick with it, it will be easiest. If it lasted 34 years, the rebuilt one will outlast the truck!

Thanks for all the great advice!

Any recommendations for a transmission shop in Tampa Bay?
