Any ill effects to my 700r4?

another TC question, whats a good one and were is the best place to buy one. I found my trans leak yesterday and the snout on my TC was about to brake off and leaking through the crack that was begining to go all the way around the weld area.

okay guys sorry to dredge this back up but ive been putting my k5 into normal drive instead of OD recently. When im in D, as im slowing down to a stop, around 10-15mph i feel/heard a small thump and it feels like something under the truck is sliding forward and hitting something and stopping. When im in OD this does not happen. This normal or should i be worried? She normally shifts gears very smoothly. The only time it hits kinda hard is when i shift her from park to R or D or OD and this. Again, should i be worried or avoid D and use OD? Thanks.

Are your u-joints loose? In the past when I've had some that needed replacing, I'd get a loud "clunk" when I put it in gear from park, and occasionally when downshifting as the truck rolled to a stop.

This was normal for about '84-'86 700's. It is annoying, but nothing to worry about. I did research a few years ago trying to figure out what causes it and if there is a fix, but didn't find anything.

I also feel that driving in "3" is better until you get on the highway, as it prevents lugging and uneccesary shifts.

On that topic, I have always heard that shifting in and out of overdrive too much wears out the 3-4 clutch pack. Well the 3-4 clutch pack should not be shifting - the 3-4 shift is done through application of the band by the servo. You do hear about 3-4 clutchs burning up, but not so much about the band going out and leaving you without 2nd gear. The 3-4 clutch should be stressed the most by shifting into 3rd gear (from 2nd). This implies that this clutch is slipping when it shouldn't, so the problem could be solved by just increasing the pressure to it. As a drawback, the timing of the 2-3 (and therefore 3-2) shift would be affected.

Must be normal on 83's too , mine has always engine braked in D and did not engine braked in OD .

Thought it was maybe a Diesel tranny I had .... I know my rig stalls pretty low compared to a normal rig .

As for lugging with 35's and 4.10's , what kind of motor ? and is it wore out ? I was able to use OD on flat ground , and D on hills with 35's and 3.73's ..... with a 305 .

I dunno, but my 160k mile 350 pulls pretty darn good with my 35's & 4.10's. I've even had a couple of my freinds comment on how well it pulled :dunno:

I run 4.10s and 35s and it works fine. My nephews rave about how it "gets up and goes" (the low first gear in a 700 is nice - so is TPI :D). OD at 55mph is like 1600rpm.

Heck, I used OD with 3.08s and 33's. It would downshift if a bug hit the windshield and the engine was at about 12rpm , but nothing bad ever happened.

Now if 4.56 gears were free and required no labor I would swap.

EDIT: OK, I would probably do the labor if somebody gave me new gearsets for free...

Mine downshifts like the others in drive, and it's a '90. This truck is my tow rig for our atvs, that's why I need lower gears. I tow a 22' car trailer loaded with atvs quite often.

Good to know guys thanks! Yeah i started driven her around in D instead of OD and i notice that she seems to have more pickup. Kinda feels like shes got more power. Im going with the policy of OD only for the highway. As for my u-joints im gonna check in the summer as well as most everything else, its too damn cold to work on her.

My 700 has more go in D and not OD too. I save OD for the interstate. Also
Depends on the motor and vehical weight, I have 35 BF AT KO on my K5 and 4.10 gears and you can't lock in the TC because of engine vac. 400hp SB and anthing below 2000rpms and its a turd. I need to do aleast 2200rpm with the TC locked at 60mph so I am looking at changing to 4.56 or 4.88 with 35 tires, also I turn +6000rpms before my 700r4 will shift gears if your foot is flat on the floor, 2nd gear tire bark with 35's and detroit is cool:D Humm maybe thats why I broke my pump drive off my TC last week, Hummm:rolleyes:

I unpluged the lockup on mine. I've been running it that way for almost 2 years now. I don't ever use my truck for extended periods on the highway. I get about 12-13 mpg with it. In fact, I really don't care too much about mileage.....I mean no matter what it's not gonna be great.
