I know I know this is a Chevy site but i have a dodge truck and need some advice. It's a 79 Dodge 3/4 ton truck and it has a 400 BB. Thing is i have never timed one of these and am having a bit of trouble. No idea what i'm doing here. I've timed a bunch of Chevy's by ear meaning w/o a timing light and can't seem to get this one just right. it'll turn over fast then slow down then go fast again. Really aggravating cause i can't figure it out.

Thanks if anyone can help. BTW the dodge forums i went to suck so i came to where i know i should get some kind of answer ;)

Go away this is a Chevy site

Have you tried RamChargerCentral.com. Should be plenty of people there willing to help with your dodge. Almost all the trucks there are 93 and older. I also post over there for help with my Ramcharger.

The big block chryslers have the same firing order as chevy, but i believe the rotation of the distributor is the other way (counterclockwise). 18436572 is the firing order and the hardest thing to do on the chrysler big blocks is line up the distributor on the oil pump driveshaft perfectly to line up the rotor on the number 1 piston, major bitch as gravity is working against you.

Hmm even more stuff to try out. Thanks for the tip. That's actually what i was looking for ;)

you must be thinking of another engine. big block dodge are easy to put a distributor in. the distributor shaft is shaped like a flat head screw driver and either fits in one way or 180* the other and there is no gravity issues because the oil pump shaft is secured by the oil pump on one end and the gear at the other.

i could have swore that you find tdc first, then put oil pump pushrod in first so it lines up with the slot on the pump (hex) and the gear on top meshes with the cam (the hardest step) at an angle because you have to twist it 1 tooth over so it lines up and then if it doesnt line up, its hard to pull back out of the motor to try again. Then the dizzy drops in. Harder then a chevy or f**d for that matter. Its been a while since ive done it, but i remember cussing on that one.

in the end, the big block chrysler was far superior in design the chevy. the distributor is in the front where it should be, no coolant in the intake, don't have to remove the distributor when swapping intakes, shaft mount rockers, external oil pump, valley pan prevents oil from splashing on intake (its a factory air gap!), larger diameter lifter bore which can support more agressive cam profiles. i still like my chevys though. thats why i got 2 burbs and a nasty big block about to go in one of them.

Yeah i've been a chevy guy my whole life. Never thought i'd own a Dodge or Ford but knew i couldn't hold out forever

yeah, i agree with the design of chrysler big blocks, much better design period, working on friends mopars all the time, 68 cuda with a 383 and a 68 charger with a 440. But my stuff is chevy, workin on a bb chevy at the moment for my 74.
