Long ago I accidently crossed the battery cables to the battery (positive to negative and negative to positive). It took a few seconds when I started to smell smoke and then I quick removed the cables from the battery. I burned one fusible link and the cable for the transfer indicator light. That fusible link saved the main harness on the K5.

I melted the main battery cable to the starter and friend the fuseable link that powers the junction block on the firewall. Now that I rewired my truck, I used a big maxi fuse for the entire system.

not sure if/when, but at one point while sorting some electrical issues it was found to be "crunchy" inside the insulation. the wire itself was obliterated and could not have been allowing the power through as needed, but almost no visible signs of heat on the outside.
