Any one running 38.5x14.5\'s with 4-5\" of lift?

Ran the UAV up a ramp yesterday to check the clerance on the 37's and to think about what I need to do for 38.5's. The 37's clear with the wheels straight but if they where turned at all, I think they would hit the floorboards, could move the axle forward an 1" or so but then might hit the front, I dunno. In the rear I moved the axle back 1-3/4" so it clears the front part of the rear fennder no problem but kisses the rear part, might cut the rear trailing edge back simmilar to the front or play with axle placement some more, anyway that is not the problem, when the tire gets stuffed under the top lip it just barely touches the tire, if I were to put 14.5" wide tires I'm sure I would have to cut the upper wheel well or lift it higher or take the wheel spacers out, I really do not want to do any of those but might have to lift it a little more. Any one running 38.5x14.5's with this situation, I know Pete runs 39.5's but I think he cut up into the upper lip, I can't wait to see Stephen Watson's next week with 42's to see what he did.

First off, I wanted to say Thank you for putting Emmet up as Blazer of the Month!!!! You picked the perfect month since my B-day is on the 22nd... THANKS!!

Now on to the topic...

There was a guy around here running 44's or 42's with a 3" body lift, but he had to go to town with a sawzall and the tires still rubbed.. Most of the fender was cut out, front and rear... I will see if I can scrounge up pics... It wasn't pretty...

Yeah, I cut the upper lip (at least if I understand what you're saying). I had to ditch the inner fenders too.

Put the Blazer on the trailer for the first time yesterday, looking in the rearview of the tow vehicle I can just see the tops of the headlights. Had to drive over the fenders with the front tires, and squeeze the rears between the back of them. Waiting on tie downs and a brake controller. Don't think my neighbors like me.

Yeah, that's what I thought, I think I could fanagle the front, it's the width in the back that's the killer.

I'd remove the spacers before the inner lip on the rear fender. Or maybe just do the flat deck thing...

I really hate the skinny rear axle thing, but what I could do is go with a 3/4" spacer and cut down the studs instead of the 1 and 1/4" space that I have now, that would save me a 1/2" anyway. I have a while before I get another set of tires anyway.

A little creative clearancing would also gain you another 1/2" or so, and I don't think you'd be able to notice it from outside.
Do you still have lots of room to the inside of the inner fender?

umm... So the 14 FF is 3" shorter in back just like the 10 bolts? I thought the 14 FF was the appropiate length.

What bumpstops are you running in the rear? Maybe if you went to a taller one you could get by without trimming too much of the rear....(like the ORD units) Or maybe trim the lip that hangs out from the top and around the sides some...

The ff is only 2" narrower than the front.

I know what my mailman did on his chevy P/U. he's a lowered crowd type of guy with the 3/4 drop and so on, he very carefully rolled the lip of the fender, i think he backed it up with a piece of round stock, then very carfully rolled it up with a body hammer, or maybe a soft faced mallet, any way he didn't even crack the paint. You might try that, then if it does rub, it won't be a sharp edge. BTW the tires are great, they do sound like a B-17 on the Fwy. but hey i can live with that.

You sure Steve?? 2" narrower??
I measured mine and it was 3" narrower...I first thought something like that, but when I measured them, the 14bolt was shorter by 3" hub to hub. So I bought 1.5" spacers on each side...man, I may have to remeasure.

2" Boss, measure from inside tire to inside tire, front and rear, the ff will be 2" narrower, the reason I went with 1-1/4" spaces instead of 1" is because I didn't want to cut the studs down.

I am in the process of cutting the wheel well opening larger and making custom wheel wells in the back and soon to be the front so that way if the tire can clear the outer fender it will have some where to go and i get rid of some rust.

hey steve i have a 79 with 4 inc springs ord shackles and a front dana 60, so i think we have the same amount of lift i run 38.5 14.50 sxs on 15x10s and i have no rubbing at all front or rear, i had to cut a lot but i kept the inner fenders, i dont know how to post pics though if i email u them willu post pics for everyone to see

Shaggy, I didn't measure when I went up the ramp, hell I don't even know what my wheelbase is anymore, moved the rear axle back a little for clearance. More concerened with getting everything done by EJS.

Steve, on the rear I cut the inner fender loose from the outer, and then used a BFH to pound it out so that it is as a 90 deg. angle to the outer sheet metal. The way it is, mud & crud is prevented from flying around too much back there, it keeps it in the wheel well better than if i had just cut it off.

Give me a jingle if you want to stop by and see it, I'll probably be at home a lot between now and Moab, working on the trucks and school stuff. Otherwise, I'll probably see you in Moab.
